High Schools: Garnet Valley rallies to top Lower Merion for Paul Costa’s 200th coaching win

Garnet Valley girls soccer coach Paul Costa likely couldn’t have scripted a more dramatic finish for his 200th career victory Tuesday.

With less than 30 seconds left in regulation, Jaguars goalkeeper Reese Regula made a vital punch on a corner kick, sealing GV’s 2-1 win over Lower Merion.

Down 1-0 at halftime, the Jaguars leveled the score with a pair of goals from Maddie Smith. Taylor Bryan set up the game-tying goal. Kendall Cottrell had the feed on the winner.

Elsewhere in the Central League:

Strath Haven 1, Penncrest 0 >> Rudy Kane broke a scoreless tie in the 65th minute off a direct free kick.

Alice Rieger recorded the shutout in goal with two saves, as the Panthers extended their season-opening winning streak to six games.

Marple Newtown 8, Upper Darby 0 >> Illiana Botos netted two goals as the Tigers (4-3) routed the Royals. Mollie Jackson, Lexi Schlater, Emily Frescoln, Rihana Ndini, Keira Bethke and Justine Rimple each scored a goal.

In nonleague action:

Cardinal O’Hara 9, Penn Wood 0 >> Caitlin McClain paced the Lions with two goals. Leah Hudak (on a penalty kick), Alana Phillips, Cora Leopold, Marina Mersch, Isabella Luistro, Phanta Bambara and Kiera Healy also scored for the Lions.

Episcopal Academy 2, Pennington 1 >> Fresh off a victory over nationally ranked opposition from Maryland, the Churchwomen added a win over the New Jersey powerhouse behind goals from Avery Le and Bridget Dempsey. Quinn Whitaker and Sofia Gagliardi had the assists as EA won its fourth straight game.

Field Hockey

Angelina Ellis delivered the game-winning goal in the final minute of overtime, sending Sun Valley home happy with a 2-1 victory over rival Coatesville.

Goalie Mia Ellis made several crucial saves in overtime to keep Chichester at bay, while Addyson Garrity also scored for the Vanguards (2-2).

In another nonleague match:

Agnes Irwin 6, Arch. Carroll 0 >> Catie Holmes scored twice and Caroline Chisholm and Gabby Lee both produced a goal and two assists for the Owls. Kitt Neel and Cassidy Vollmer supplied a goal apiece.

Agnes Irwin goalie Lily Hark stopped the only shot on target she faced. Fiona Conboy made six saves for Carroll.

In the Inter-Ac League:

Notre Dame 9, Penn Charter 0 >> Maura Seeger notched a hat trick and Maeve McGinley added two goals and one assist for the Irish. Lexy Haub scored a pair of goals, while Fiona Seeger also scored. Lexy Patton and Elanna Duff (one save) combined for the shutout in the cage.

In the Central League:

Springfield 2, Radnor 1 >> Ella Smyth scored the go-ahead goal in the fourth quarter. Macy Gougler also scored for the Cougars.

Springfield’s Charlize Garrett and Sara Campbell were excellent in goal, totaling 16 saves between them. Kara Clark thrived on defense for the Cougars.

Conestoga 6, Ridley 0 >> Despite the loss Ridley’s Elise Martin put forth a gutsy effot in goal, making 30 saves.

Volleyball

Keira Murray served nine aces and handed out 20 assists, and Julia Pfleger contributed seven kills, five aces and two digs to help Chichester to a 3-0 sweep over Academy Park in a Del Val League match.

Ava Caruso (four kills, seven aces) and Carley Leonard (five kills, three aces) also performed well for the Eagles, who won by game scores of 25-10, 25-7, 25-12.

In the Catholic League:

Cardinal O’Hara 3, Bonner & Prendergast 0 >> Bridget O’Reilly dominated with 28 assists, five digs and three aces as the Lions cruised past the Pandas, 25-7, 25-17, 25-17.

Julia Riley posted 12 digs. In the attack, Ashlyn Gualtieri recorded 12 kills and Solei Staggs added seven.

In the Central League:

Haverford 3, Radnor 1 >> The Fords bested the Raptors, 25-16, 25-27, 25-17, 25-21, late Monday.

Leading the Raptors were Monika Mortensen with 11 kills and Kinsey Carrigan with five aces. Alexis Rothchild-Brennan, a freshman, served six points in a row to help the Raptors take over the second set.

No information on Haverford was reported.

Girls Cross Country

Kendra Williamson of Episcopal Academy set a course record with a time of 19 minutes, 36 seconds during an Inter-Ac League tri-meet against Notre Dame and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy.

Notre Dame bested Episcopal (26-29) and SCHA (23-38), while Episcopal triumphed over SCHA (23-38).

Notre Dame’s Mary Rossano placed second with a time of 21:14. Kara Sweeney (22:37), Carson Tierney (22:45) and Aly Wolfe (22:48) finished sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively, for the Irish.

Episcopal’s Hannah Todd claimed sixth place in 22:34. Teammates Anna Bradford (23:31) and Joy Ying (23:44) rounded out the top 10.

Boys Soccer

Goals by Michael McGonagle and Garrett Rhoades powered Episcopal Academy to a 2-1 decision over Shipley in nonleague action.

Balthizar Buccini provided assists on both goals.

In the Central League:

Marple Newtown 1, Upper Darby 0 >> Lefti Giovanniulis accounted for the game’s lone goal to lead the Tigers to the victory. Aran Trainor set it up.
