PIAA Lacrosse: Carroll girls, Marple Newtown boys start title defenses with romps

Step 1 in Archbishop Carroll’s four-peat bid was handled with aplomb Tuesday, Sam Hewitt scoring five times in a 13-4 handling of Springfield-Montco in the first round of the PIAA Class 2A tournament.

Hewitt added an assist. Chloe Bleckley had two goals, four assists and four draw controls for the Patriots (18-2). Kate O’Neill and Kallee Clark scored twice each, Clark adding an assist. Claire Sexton had a goal and a team-high five draw controls for Carroll, which led 11-3 after three quarters. Mei Rader made five saves in goal.

In the Class 3A girls tournament:

Penncrest 20, Wilson 16 >> Cara Childs scored six times, and Kate Stanton added five goals and two assists as the Lions took a step toward getting back to the state final.

Last year’s runner-up was tied with Wilson at five early in the second quarter before a four-goal run provided space the Lions would never relinquish. Kaitlyn Roth, who scored twice, started that run, leading to a 13-6 Penncrest edge at half. The lead stretched to 18-11 on Stanton’s fifth before the Bulldogs tried to make it interesting late.

Adisyn Bernhardt added two goals and an assist for the Lions.

In the Class 2A boys tournament:

Marple Newtown 16, Crestwood 3 >> The reigning PIAA champs led 10-1 after one quarter and rolled to victory.

Evan Kostack led the way with five goals and three assists. Brian Box had four and three. Joey Yukenavitch tallied a hat trick, and Alex Chambers went 13-for-19 at the X with a goal.
