Jimmy Boyle was excellent on the mound and delivered the walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning Monday to give No. 15 Haverford a 4-3 victory over 18th-seeded Pennridge in the opening round of the District 1 Class 6A tournament.
Boyle pitched seven innings, recording 12 strikeouts. He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits. Gavin McClafferty struck out eight without giving up a hit in four innings of shutout relief.
The Fords (13-7-1), who fell behind 3-0 in the second inning, tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. John Sharkey led off with a double and moved to third on a Boyle single. Shane Durkan smacked a single to right field to drive in Sharkey. Rocci Kelleher scored the winning run.
Haverford travels to No. 2 Neshaminy for the second round Wednesday.
In other District 1 Class 6A first-round action:
Garnet Valley 11, Council Rock South 6 >> Trailing 2-0, the 10th-seeded Jaguars exploded for nine runs in the second inning and never looked back. Chris Schaller and Brady Thompson blasted back-to-back homers to give GV an 8-2 lead.
Mark Zuppo (two runs scored), Schaller (three RBIs), Justin Gretsky (double) and Harrison Maull (two RBIs) each collected two hits for the Jags (13-6-1).
Garnet Valley plays at No. 7 Central Bucks East Wednesday.
In the District 1 Class 5A first round:
Marple Newtown 7, Phoenixville 4 >> Paul DeFruscio crushed the go-ahead three-run homer in the fifth inning for the eighth-seeded Tigers (15-6). DeFruscio went 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
Aiden Pearson, Lucien Burger and Jack Maholick each had a double. Aiden Curran scattered four runs on three hits in 5.1 innings to earn the win. Pearson struck out four in 1.2 no-hit innings of relief.
Marple Newtown hits the road Wednesday to play Del Val League champion and top-seeded Chichester.
Penncrest 2, Upper Moreland 1 >> In a game with just six total hits, Penncrest came up with two decisive ones in the bottom of the sixth, with Ben Ettien driving in Sam Dinitz, who walked, with a single and Henry Murphy doubling home Ettien’s courtesy runner.
That was all the fifth-seeded Lions’ pitching needed. Gavin Brown went five innings, allowing three hits and an unearned run, in part thanks to five walks. He struck out seven. Josh Kalinowski got the win with two innings of hit-free relief.
