Roundup (May 8): Tommy Whitesel’s walk-off single caps off big day as Phoenixville edges Spring-Ford

Phoenixville 4, Spring-Ford 3

Tommy Whitesel went 3-for-4, including a walk-off single in the seventh inning to deliver Phoenixville a PAC crossover triumph.

Nico Nattle tossed a complete game win for the Phantoms (6-3, 9-6, 10-7), allowing three runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking three.

Sam Marsh went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the victory.

The result could have massive ramifications on the PAC postseason picture – with a win over Pottstown Friday, Phoenixville will take the second wild card via head-to-head tiebreaker over Spring-Ford (10-6, 12-7).

Nick Flores had two hits and an RBI for Spring-Ford, and Ryan Cecconi and Jake Witmer also plated runs in the defeat.

Andrew Wible got the start on the mound for the Rams, permitting only two hits and one run to go with four walks and three punchouts. Ethan Freed struck out five in 2.2 innings of relief but took the loss, surrendering three hits, an earned run and two walks.

Pope John Paul II 2, Boyertown 1

AJ Diaddezio had an RBI double and also recorded the final six outs on the mound to pick up the save for PJP. He struck out three in two perfect innings of relief in a PAC crossover victory.

Aidan Sgarra drew the start for the Golden Panthers and allowed a run on three hits with eight strikeouts. Tyler Tindall also had a run-scoring hit in the win.

Jonah Mayer pitched well in a losing effort for Boyertown, giving up two runs on four hits, striking out 11 over six innings.

Easton Albert knocked in the lone Bears run.

Methacton 7, Upper Perkiomen 0

Will Christian and Austin Frank teamed up to throw seven shutout innings for Methacton in a PAC crossover victory. Christian went the first five frames to pick up the win, allowing just three hits while striking out four. Frank got the final six outs, allowing just two base runners and striking out one.

The Warriors, who finished the regular season 16-4 overall and 13-3 in PAC play, scored three quick runs in the bottom of first to get the jump on Upper Perk. Chase McNally hit a two-run home run in the inning, and Ben Clark also knocked in a pair of runs in the game.

Kasey Humes, Nick Remish and Bryce Lohsen also plated runs for Methacton, which had five extra base hits.

Cole Pierce took the loss for the Indians, allowing three runs and four hits in his one inning of work.

Norristown 12, Pottsgrove 2

Norristown pounded out 14 hits in just five innings of work, plating eight runs in the bottom of the fourth and another four runs in the home fifth. Every Eagles batter had at least one hit.

Chase Logan (2-for-4, 2SB, 2R), Brett Murphy (2-for-2, 2 2B, SB, 2R), Justin Fryer (2-for-4, 2B, SB, R) and Asher Guarino (2-for-3, 2B, SB, R) all knocked in two runs for Norristown, which had five extra base hits and stole eight bases.

Drew Mocarski pitched a five-inning complete game victory, allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out three and walked three.

Zayd Rogers and Carter Burg each had run-scoring hits for Pottsgrove.

Hill School 8, Blair Academy 2

Pottstown native Collin Mattis pitched a gem on the mound to earn the win for Hill, throwing four shutout innings in which he allowed only one hit.

Robert Pavlek tossed two scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts to close out the game.

Derek Boyd-Volz went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and a two-run home run. Chase McCusker and Charlie Winston had multiple hits for Hill, which improved to 8-4 overall with the win.


Boys’ Lacrosse

Pope John Paul II 6, North Penn 5

Ryan Lamson had two goals and two assists, including the game-winning score with 33 seconds left to deliver PJP a thrilling non-league win.

Denny Owens also scored twice for the Golden Panthers, who got additional goals from Ian Young and Riley Lumpkin. Jake Vigilante recorded two assists in the win.

Sean Fallon (15 saves) and Elijah Whitfield (four saves) split goalie duties in the cage.


Softball

Upper Perkiomen 6, Methacton 2

Erin Gray went the distance in the pitching circle for Upper Perk, yielding two runs and four hits across seven strong innings. She struck out two and walked one.

Kaylyn Adair had a two-run triple for the Indians, and Elizabeth Proctor also tripled home a run in the win. Emma Davidheiser knocked in two and also scored a run.

Courtney Freese picked up the loss for Methacton but pitched well, striking out nine over 4.2 innings.

Jillian McTamney and Madison Krupiewski each had sacrifice flies for the Warriors.

Spring-Ford 4, Phoenixville 0

Katie Cecconi tossed a complete game shutout for Spring-Ford while allowing six hits and racking up seven strikeouts in a PAC crossover victory.

Riley Gancasz and Addie Eross each knocked in a pair of runs for the Rams. Nova Legassie had two hits and scored two runs in the win.

Sara Chajko pitched well in the loss for Phoenixville, allowing one earned run and five hits across six strong innings. She struck out one and walked one.

Perkiomen Valley 1, Upper Merion 0

Maci Strechay’s complete game three-hit shutout carried the Vikings to a PAC playoff clincher over Frontier first place Upper Merion.

Strechay struck out 10 and outdueled Ava DiDonato (6 IP, 5H, 0 ER, 4K) in what could be a PAC semifinal preview on Monday.
