Roundup (April 19): Late RBI hits from Benincasa, Simmers deliver PJP softball 7-6 PAC Frontier win over Upper Perk

Pope John Paul II 7, Upper Perkiomen 6

Sophia Benincasa (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Abby Simmers (2-for-4, 2 RBI) had run-scoring singles in the pivotal three-run sixth inning to propel Pope John Paul II past Upper Perkiomen in a PAC Frontier matchup Friday.

The Golden Panthers overcame six errors thanks to a Rylee Derecola diving catch in the sixth that saved two runs and allowed Lexi DiBricida to see out a complete-game win (7 IP,  8H, 4 ER, 3K).

For 10-hit PJP, Abigaile Millhouse and Charlie Hallman each doubled and drove in a run.

Upper Perk received a 2-for-4 day from Darby Gasda (RBI) and double from Elizabeth Parker (2 RBI).

Perkiomen Valley 8, Owen J. Roberts 0

Maci Strechay threw a four-hit shutout with four strikeouts to carry Perk Valley to a PAC Liberty win over Owen J. Roberts Friday.

PV, which had 13 hits, used a four-run second inning and single tallies in the following four innings to grow the winning margin.

Offensively, Lily Petaccio was 2-for-2 with three RBI and Erin Carosi and Sammy Petrsen were 2-for-3 for PV (9-2).

Rachel Epps was 2-for-3 for the Wildcats.

Baseball

Owen J. Roberts 8, Perkiomen Valley 5

Down 5-3 entering the sixth, Owen J. Roberts broke out with a five-run sixth for the win over Perkiomen Valley and improved to 8-2.

In the decisive home sixth, OJR got an RBI single from Jackson Waters to tie the game 5-5, then built the lead on an error, Sam Taylor bases-loaded two-RBI single.

Gavin Cinkowski got the win after throwing two hit-free innings in relief, striking out three.

Aidan Autovino and Tyler Gilbert each had a hit and two RBI for PV (5-5).

Upper Merion 16, Pottstown 1

A 10-run first inning sent Upper Merion to a three-inning rout of Pottstown Friday.

Carmen Pascale, Dylan Roberts, David Peck, Teddy Walmsley and Nathan Gordon had run-scoring hits in the double-digit first.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Upper Merion 8, Pope John Paul II 7

Upper Merion overcame a 5-2 halftime deficit, rallying for a thrilling PAC Frontier victory over PJP.

Mackenzie Davis scored a team-high three goals for the Vikings, and Olivia Smith and Sam Walmsley each found the back of the net twice. Chelsea Smith added a goal and an assist for Upper Merion, while Elisa Dougherty (two assists) and Maura Besz (one assist) each set up Viking goals.

Anaya Onwubuariri came up strong between the posts with 13 saves in the winning effort.

Jill Cobaugh tallied four goals for PJP, with Ava Zepp, Camryn Grimley and Molly Bauchman all scoring one apiece.

Spring-Ford 13, Perkiomen Valley 10

Riley Czapor scored a game-high four goals while adding an assist in helping Spring-Ford to a big PAC Liberty triumph over Perk Valley. Czapor also secured four draw controls.

Megan Ruckman (3G, 1CT), Hailey Mozi (2G, 3CT, 4DC) and Rella Talley (2G, 1CT) all produced multi-goal efforts for the Rams. Gianna DiBattista and Lindsay Evak scored as well, and Ilyana Jones came up with 11 saves in goal.

Holli Nuss led the Vikings with three goals and two assists. Leah Pfeiffer scored twice, including her 100th career goal. Grace Shaffner (2G, 1GB) and Julia Foley (2G, 1A, 1GB, 2CT, 3DC) also had two goals for PV. Lindsay Farrington chipped in a goal, and Charlotte Foster made seven saves in the losing effort.

Upper Perkiomen 19, Pottstown 4

Maggie Milkowich and Marianne Uber each notched hat tricks for Upper Perk, which scored 10 first-quarter goals and cruised to a PAC Frontier win over Pottstown.

Abby Davidheiser, Abby Orsini, Mia Schneider, Jade Bugman and Mia Ulmer all scored twice for the Indians. Angelina Glackin, Maguire Simms and Giana Kozminski also found the back of the net in the win.

Jordyn Kemmer and Taylor Kemmer chipped in assists for Upper Perkiomen.
