High Schools: Marple ends Radnor’s long lacrosse winning streak

Marple Newtown sent shockwaves across the boys lacrosse landscape Thursday. Evan Kostack buried the game-winning goal in overtime as Marple Newtown conquered Radnor, 8-7, in a battle of reigning PIAA champions.

The victory for the Tigers snapped the Raptors’ 40-game regular season winning streak in the Central League. Radnor has won the last three Central and PIAA Class 3A titles.

Marple goalie Marco D’Alicandro (18 saves) was awesome. Brian Box produced two goals and three assists, while Alex Gillian and Joey Yukenavitch each scored twice.

Garnet Valley 14, Upper Darby 4 >> It was a night of firsts for the Jaguars as seven players – Matt Medici, Ethan Cleaver, Chase Wilt, Nick Scamuffa, Matt Abbonizio, Chris Finnegan and Ryan Lutness – scored their first varsity goals.

Springfield 15, Haverford 3 >> Pat Flaherty powered the Cougars with four goals. Ty Gougler provided three goals and three assists, while Luke Valerio (two assists) and Brad Barber (one assist) each scored twice.

Liam Taylor, Charlie Turner and Nils McCallion did the scoring for Haverford.

Ridley 11, Lower Merion 6 >> John Tinney and Luke Showalter both finished with three goals and one assist for the Green Raiders. Chris Capozolli and Jon Daniel each had two goals.

Conestoga 8, Penncrest 7 >> Matt Ferry and Spencer Meile netted two goals apiece as the Lions dropped a tough one to the Pioneers. Goalie Caden Paukstis had seven saves.

Harriton 9, Strath Haven 7 >> Joey Orye recorded two goals and one assist for the Panthers.

Girls Lacrosse

Catie Holmes (three goals, two assists) scored in triple overtime to give Agnes Irwin an 11-10 win over Episcopal Academy in Inter-Ac League action. Ellie Brady led the way with four tallies.

In the Central League:

Ridley 16, Lower Merion 2 >> Callie Bryan found the back of the net five times to lead the Green Raiders past the Aces. Nadia Henkel added a hat trick and Abby Axe paired two goals with one assist.

Garnet Valley 16, Upper Darby 0 >> Mia Raucci (two assists), Nina Cancini, Ellarose Griggs, Taylor Halloran, Brooke McGovern and Ryann Razzano all scored twice for the Jaguars.

Springfield 12, Haverford 7 >> Maddie Kane led the Cougars with four goals and two assists. Jaclyn Guille, Allie Hunter, Claire Lynch and Kylee O’Donnell all scored twice.

Kayla Elliot recorded a hat trick and Annie Walker had two goals for the Fords.

Radnor 15, Marple Newtown 5 >> Lizzie Getz and Riley Mattson tallied two goals apiece in the losing effort. No Radnor stats were reported.

Conestoga 11, Penncrest 8 >> Conestoga’s Kiki Liebezeit notched career goal No. 100. She and Ellie Wisch finished with three apiece.

In the Catholic League:

Arch. Carroll 19, Little Flower 0 >> Morgan Wood, Lily Chung and Astrid Davis all finished with a goal and two assists for the Patriots (8-1, 4-0).

In the Del Val:

Chichester 14, Interboro 5 >> Chi’s Natalia Willoughby scored seven goals for the second straight game. Megan Murray netted a hat trick.

Madi Mea paced the Bucs with five goals.

In nonleague play:

Villa Maria 13, Cardinal O’Hara 4 >> Fran Frazio led the Lions with two goals and three draw controls.

Baseball

Will Hoffman went the distance as Haverford defeated Penncrest, 6-0, in Central League action. The Lions (6-4, 5-3) managed only four singles off Hoffman, who notched four strikeouts. Shane Durkan went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for the Fords.

Radnor 8, Ridley 1 >> Winning pitcher Ryan Williams twirled a gem over six innings, allowing just two singles. Zach Fein had three hits, while Teddy Monahan and Andres Cruz each supplied a pair of knocks.

Lower Merion 1, Strath Haven 0 >> Nicholas Dragut walked it off for the Aces (7-4) with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh. Rob Mattai gave the first-place Panthers (9-2) six shutout innings, allowing two hits.

Springfield 10, Upper Darby 0 >> Jake Adams pitched a five-inning perfect game in his first career varsity start. He had eight KO’s.

Zach King homered and drove in three runs. Vinny Valerio went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Garnet Valley 4, Marple Newtown 3 >> Chris Shaller had a sacrifice fly and an RBI single as the Jaguars (5-3-2) nipped the Tigers (6-4). Aiden Hennelly had a hit and two RBIs for Marple.

In the Ches-Mont League:

Sun Valley 3, Great Valley 2 >> Justin Hickman gave the Vanguards some breathing room with a two-run double in the sixth inning. Hickman also pitched two frames in relief to earn the save.

Pat Wiley picked up the win after going five strong. He racked up nine K’s

In the Inter-Ac League:

Haverford School 10, Germantown Academy 8 >> The Fords answered GA’s five-run top of the sixth with a four spot in the bottom half. Connor Scanlan (three hits, three runs, three RBIs) knocked in the go-ahead run and Zac Fuscaldo (two hits, four RBIs) smashed a bases-loaded double.

In the Del Val:

Interboro 14, Academy Park 0 >> Evan Thomas ripped three doubles and Nate Mowbray and Shawn Levin combined to pitch a five-inning no-hitter.

In the Bicentennial League:

Dock Mennonite 8, Delco Christian 1 >> Jackson Lewis doubled for the Knights.

Softball

Ridley freshman Mackenzie Sheppleman pitched a five-hitter with seven strikeouts and helped her cause with an RBI double in a 9-2 win against Radnor. Ryleigh Hagerty (two RBIs) and Caitlyn Senkow (three runs scored) collected three hits each for the Green Raiders.

Elsewhere in the Central League:

Springfield 11, Upper Darby 1 >> Payton Feeney threw a no-hitter and helped herself with three hits. Fiona McLaughlin homered and Ryleigh Frye (double) drove in four runs for the Cougars. Nikki Morrison contributed three hits.

Haverford 15, Penncrest 0 >> Annabelle Knese homered, doubled and tripled for the Fords. Madie Culbertson was a dinger shy of the cycle and Alli Daly added three hits.

In the Del Val:

Interboro 20, Penn Wood 1 >> Summer Burrell went 4-for-4 with a double and a triple for the Bucs (7-3, 3-0), who won in three innings. Mare Nagle had three hits and five RBIs, and Olivia Bulovas recorded eight strikeouts.

In nonleague play:

Episcopal Academy 16, Merion Mercy 1 >> Seven of EA’s 14 hits went for extra bases as Hanna-Mae Legaspi was 4-for-5 with three doubles and four ribbies. Sophia Santinelli provided two doubles and a homer.

In the Catholic League:

Card. O’Hara 5, St. Hubert 1 >> Hayden Sissons (2-run triple) recorded 13 KO’s. Ava Dill added two ribbies and Hayden Reale had two hits.
