County’s top track and field athletes battle at Ches-Mont Super Meets

Downingtown >> With a well-rounded effort in the field events as well as on the track, the Avon Grove girls compiled a 6-0 record at the Ches-Mont National Super Meet, concluded Tuesday at Downingtown West High School.

The Red Devil girls finished first in pole vault (Alena Kurtz, eight feet, six inches), discus (Ryan Boggetta, 108-9), high jump (Lexi Boiardi, 5-4), shot put (Sarah Rossman, 35-9), the 4×400 relay team of Eden Veenema, Chloe Hopkins, Zaida Caulder and Bridget Keegan (four minutes, 8.68 seconds) and the 4×800 relay team of Zaida Caulder, Elise Edwards, Isabella Harper and Lily Schindler (9:53.26).

“Lily had a nice anchor leg to get a come from behind win in the 4×8,” said Avon Grove head coach Eric Broadbent. “Both our girls and guys throwers were pretty dominant across the two days of competition.”

Boggetta finished second in the shot put (35-4.5), while Rossman placed second in the discus in the first day of the National Super Meet last week.

Rossman said, “I think (winning here) is pretty cool because it’s a bigger meet. I was hoping to throw 34 feet today for a district qualifier. I just tried to stay relaxed (today) and not worry about it too much.”

Bishop Shanahan senior Meghan Willis won the girls 800 meter run (district qualifying 2:20.85) and 1600 meter run (5:21.72). Other first-place finishers for the National girls were Downingtown East’s Nia Massey (100 meter run, PR 12.01), D-East’s Faith Fuqua (200 meter run, 25.09), Downingtown West’s Molly Weitzman (400 meter run, 57.79), D-West’s Maggie Tarpley (3200 meter run, 11:38.99), D-East’s Corina Colmenares-Bittar (100 hurdles, 17.17), Coatesville’s Ciana Rosato (300 hurdles, 50.25), the Downingtown East quartet of Julie Zajac, Massey, Olivia Dever and Fuqua in the 4×100 relay (48.78), Downingtown West’s Saania Stewart (long jump, 16-11), Downingtown East’s Addison Fink (triple jump, 33-6.5) and West Chester East’s Kendall Thompson (javelin, 101-3).

In the boys Ches-Mont National Super Meet, Coatesville, Avon Grove and Downingtown West each compiled 5-1 records.

The Red Raiders excelled in the short-to-middle running events with Robert Turner winning the 100 meter run (10.78) and 200 meter run (21.94), Jabari Stocker first in the 400 meter run (49.33) and Tommy Silvester prevailing in the 800 meter run (1:57.19).

“This is the first 100 I’ve run since my sophomore year, so I just wanted to get out and put a time on the board,” said Turner, a senior. “It’s a big PR for me — in 10th grade I went 11.08.”

Bishop Shanahan junior Steven Todd won the 3200 meter run with a district qualifying time of 9:35.88 in his first 3200 race of the spring.

“The 3200 is all really mental; I wanted to try to get out front and then just hope I can kick it in and stay strong,” said Todd, who held the lead for the second half of the race.

Other National boys winners were Downingtown East’s Nick Steinfeldt (1600 meter run, 4:15.42), Avon Grove’s James Billig (110 meter hurdles, 15.66), Coatesville’s Phillip DiMatteo (300 meter hurdles, 41.88), Coatesville’s 4×400 relay team (3:17.37) of Stocker,  Phillip DiMatteo, Turner and Silvester, Coatesville’s 4×100 relay (41.56) of Silvester, Turner, Donte London and Damon Watson, West Chester Henderson’s 4×800 relay (8:13.88), Coatesville’s Albert Morton (high jump, 6-4, and long jump, 22-2.5), Coatesville’s Nasir Jordan (triple jump, 43-11), Avon Grove’s Kellar Cimini (pole vault, 14-6), Avon Grove’s Jacob Lott (discus, 132-11), Avon Grove’s Elias Chase (javelin, 185-3) and West Chester East’s Tyler Duell (shot put, 42-1).

In the team competition at the end of the two Ches-Mont American Division Super Meets this past week, West Chester Rustin prevailed on the girls’ side and Great Valley finished on top on the boys side.

For the West Chester Rustin girls, first-place finishers were Brooke Kruger in the 100 meter run (12.56), 200 meter run (25.50) and 300 hurdles (47.90); Maddie Miller in the 400 meter run 57.83) and 800 meter run (2:13.76); Sophia Hnetinka in the 1600 meter run (5:13); Ryan Layton in the long jump (17-2.5) and triple jump (34-11.5); Aoife Speer-Gibson in the high jump (5-1); and Ana Dakes in discus (98-0) and shot put (30-9).

The Rustin girls also won the 4×100 (51.98), 4×400 (4:05.58) and 4×800 (9:56.25). The 4×100 included Layton, Macayla Subers, Carley Dwyer and Nora Reese. Both the 4×400 and the 4×800 teams included Miller, Hnetinka, Julia Snelling and Speer-Gibson.  The Golden Knights won 14 of the 18 events and had 11 district qualifiers.

“It was a total team effort led by our seniors – Brooke, Ryan Maddie and Julia,” said Rustin girls head coach Jim Collins.

Other American girls first-place finishers were Great Valley’s Natalie Dill (3200 meter run, 11:45.98), Kennett’s Aydrienne owden (100 hurdles, 14.76), Kennett’s Sara Frey (pole vault, 12-3), Sun Valley’s Madisyn DiMeglio (shot put, 25-5) and Oxford’s Jordan Eshleman (javelin, 89-9).

In the American boys’ competition, Great Valley swept the relays, with the 4×100 quartet of sophomores Hasan Asim, Cameron Gosa, Sean Mahoney and Jalen Bebee (43.45), the 4×400 foursome of Bebee, Colin Mahoney, DJ McGowen and Trai Ingram (3:28.20) and the 4×800 relay of Jack Thomas, Joe Benson, Ryan Pepperman and Colin Mahoney (8:11.45).

Also for Great Valley boys, Colin Mahoney won the 800 meter run (1:59.54), Pepperman won the 3200 meter run (9:37.88), Seth Tshundy won pole vault (12-6) and Hudson Ayre won discus (143-7). The Patriots finished 1-2-3 in the 800 meter run.

“Every point was important in this one,” said Great Valley head coach Nicole Jones. “Colin Mahoney, Jack Thomas and Joe Benson sweeping the top three spots in the 800 was big for us to have a shot to win with 4×400. The team had two really good days.”

Other first-place finishers for Ches-Mont American boys were Kennett’s Aiden Ritch (100 meter run, 10.96 and 200 meter run, 22.20), Rustin’s Yashil Shah (400 meter run, 50.25), Unionville’s Jonathan Stancik (1600 meter run, 4:23.75), Rustin’s Lucas Band (300 hurdles, 40.57, and 110 hurdles, 14.47), Rustin’s Ny’Jzir Jones (long jump, 20-6, and triple jump, 41-5), Kennett’s Xavier McGreal (high jump, 6-2), Rustin’s Brock Cummings (shot put, 45-11.25) and Rustin’s Matt Stevenson (javelin, 142-3).
