Track and Field: Academy Park has Bright day, GV and Ridley too at Girls Delco Relays

Kiala Bright had a big day at the Girls Delco Relays Saturday, winning a pair of gold medals. The Academy Park junior leapt 14 feet, 4.75 inches to win the long jump. She added the high jump title by clearing 5-4.

Emily Barlam of Springfield was second in the long jump, among six to clear 16 feet. Ridley’s Auldine Turay won the triple jump in 32-9.50, besting Garnet Valley’s Victoria Li by 4.5 inches. It helped Ridley tie with Garnet Valley for the team title, scoring 62 points each. Springfield was third with 58 points.

Chiera Madu and Afriyie Owusu-Tuum tied for the victory in the shot put. The senior from Notre Dame and the Ridley sophomore each threw 30 feet, 2.25 inches.

Notre Dame won two of the throws, with Temperance England tossing the discus 106-2 to win by some 16 feet over Springfield’s Katelin Keenan.

Maya Raman of Episcopal Academy won the javelin with a best result of 97 feet. Marple Newtown’s Tori Scali was third, while Keenan finished third.

Penncrest’s Kamryn Ohm, normally a pole vaulter, showed her range by finishing fourth in the javelin, sixth in the shot put and eighth in the discus.

Penncrest prevailed in the gold tally on relays, winning three of the nine. Perhaps most importantly, they won the three that are contested at PIAA meets. The Lions claimed the 4 x 100 in 49.02, the 4 x 400 in 4:02.55 and the 4 x 800 in 9:45.57.

The 4 x 100 entailed a margin of victory of more than 1.5 seconds over Garnet Valley. The Lions won the 4 x 100 by 10 seconds over Ridley and the 4 x 800 by 45 seconds over Episcopal.

Radnor’s distance group is on point, winning the 4 x 1,600 relay in 22:14.46 and the distance medley relay in 12:39.82.

Strath Haven won the shuttle hurdle relay and was third in two relays. Ridley claimed the 800 sprint medley relay to go with silver in the 4 x 200 and 4 x 400. Bonner & Prendergast won the sprint medley relay and was second in the 800 sprint medley. Garnet Valley had four top-three finishes, with a win in the 4 x 200.

Bright’s Knights showed their sprinting prowess, finishing third in the shuttle hurdles, the 4 x 200 and the 4 x 100.

At the Ford Classic:

Olivia Cieslak laid down a blistering time of 2:04.77 to win the girls 800 meters on Friday at the event hosted by Haverford High.

Cieslak’s was one of four wins for the hosts, two coming from freshmen. Ava Cavanaugh won the 400-meter dash in 57.34 seconds. Her classmate Sydney Coleman cleared 4-11 to win the high jump. Coleman also finished sixth in the 100-meter dash.

Abigail DeFruscio had a best throw of 97-2 to capture the discus. She was the runner-up in javelin. Abigail Crowley finished fourth in the javelin and third in the high jump. The Fords also went 2-3-4 in the 300 hurdles, led by Kennedy Outland.

On the boys side, Van Wendell led Strath Haven with a pair of medals. He won the 300 hurdles in 43.13 seconds after finishing fourth in the 110 hurdles. Teammate Daniel McLaughlin was second in the 110 and third in the 300. Teammate Enoch Liu threw 155-3 to win javelin.

Haverford went 1-2 in the discus, Colin Corkery tossed 119-10.5 to edge Sean Leahy by just over a foot.

Haverford School went 1-2 in the long jump, Avery Gordon flying 21 feet, 5 inches to edge mate Henry Galia. James Gates won the pole vault for Haverford School, while Chase Cobb was second in the triple jump. Nicholas Lugendo and Keegan Jacobs tied as runners-up in the high jump.

On the track, Matt Lund finished second in the 3,200 for Strath Haven. Haverford High’s Jaelyn Galloway added a silver medal in the 400 meters. Haverford High won the 4 x 100 relay, Haverford School the 4 x 400 and Strath Haven the 4 x 800.
