High Schools: Hennelly’s eighth-inning blast lifts Marple Newtown over Episcopal Academy

Aiden Hennelly crushed a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Marple Newtown a 6-5 victory over Episcopal Academy in nonleague baseball action Saturday.

The Tigers (5-2) rallied from a 5-0 deficit. Aiden Pearson hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. Pearson and Hennelly each had two RBIs, while Aidin Curran chipped in a single and three walks.

MN reliever Lucas Lancaster pitched 5.1 innings, allowing three hits and two runs (one earned), to get the win.

Owen Peiffer had two hits for the Churchmen (10-4).

In other nonleague action:

Marple Newtown 5, Interboro 0 >> Kevin Wigo, John Matthews, Colin Wertz, Aiden Liberty and Jake Gorman combined for a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts as the Tigers defeated the Bucs late Friday night. Pearson went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs.

Conestoga 6, Haverford School 5 >> Jaidyn Rivera homered and doubled for the Fords, who left nine runners stranded on base. Brandon Dunbar tossed three scoreless innings of relief to keep the Fords in the game.

In the Catholic League:

Cardinal O’Hara 7, Archbishop Carroll 3 >> Kevin King scattered three runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out four over six innings to earn the win. Brendan Till and Kevin McGuire, who doubled, both had a hit and two RBIs.

Girls Lacrosse

Jaclyn Guille scored five goals, including the 100th of her career, to help lead Springfield past Avon Grove, 15-7.

Maddie Kane (three assists) and Devin Buggy (two assists) both recorded hat tricks. Allie Hunter added two goals and two assists, while goalie Geena Augello made seven saves.

In other nonleague action:

Marple Newtown 17, Archmere (Del.) 9 >> Lizzie Getz accumulated four goals, five ground balls, two draw controls and three caused turnovers for the Tigers.

Arianna Coghlan, Riley Mattson (two assists), Lily Ebersole (two assists), Olivia Gicking (three caused turnovers) and Emily Frescoln all contributed two goals. Goalie Rowan Hilden stopped 11 shots.

Sun Valley 16, Interboro 3 >> Riley Purfield (two assists) and Rylee Hoesch totaled four goals apiece as the Vanguards pummeled the Bucs. Lucy Damico paired three goals with two assists, while Anaka Boyd-Volz supplied two goals and three helpers.

Maddie Mea accounted for both Interboro goals.

Notre Dame Prep (Md.) 12, Archbishop Carroll 10 >> Despite a four-goal effort by Katie O’Neill, the Patriots (7-1) dropped their first decision of the season against a fellow nationally-ranked power. Chloe Bleckley added a hat trick, and goalie Mei Rader made seven saves.

In the Del Val League:

Chichester 12, Academy Park 2 >> Aliyah Mojados paced the Eagles with a hat trick. Alyssa Keeth, Vanessa Amalfitano, Natalia Willoughby and Jakalyn Sykes all scored twice.

Tayina Sudler had both goals for AP.

Boys Lacrosse

Brian Box and Ryan Keating each produced three goals and two assists in Marple Newtown’s 16-2 nonleague shellacking of Holy Ghost Prep.

Joey Yukenavitch led all players with four goals. Jace Kostack added two goals and an assist. Alex Chambers went 18 of 18 on faceoffs.

In the Inter-Ac League:

Haverford School 12, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy 5 >> Evan Large amassed three goals and two assists to lead the Fords on Friday.

Brody Murphy stopped 14 shots, and faceoff man Ben McCarthy racked up nine ground balls for the Fords. Brady O’Kane, Conor Morsell and Finn Lawrence each netted two goals.

Episcopal Academy 16, Penn Charter 2 >> Dylan Jaszcz tallied four goals, and Jackson Orcutt paired three goals with two assists for the Churchmen. John Malone and Colin McGrath each scored twice and goalie Jack Guido had seven saves.

Softball

Sophia Santinelli belted a home run, and Maddie Masiko recorded 17 strikeouts as Episcopal Academy bested Penn Charter, 7-2, in Inter-Ac League play.

Masiko, Anna Gallagher, Anna Hennessey and Dominique Barrist each collected two hits for the Churchwomen.

Boys Tennis

Lower Merion’s Brian Yi conquered Ethan Sun of Conestoga 6-4, 6-2 to win the Central League singles title.

Radnor’s Antonio Fidlbus fell to Yi in the semifinals 6-0, 6-4 after besting Garnet Valley’s Ashrith Settivari in the quarterfinals.
