The Downingtown West baseball squad raced to a 3-1 lead after the first inning and went on to top visiting Avon Grove 4-2 on Wednesday. Stephen Furia and Jay Slater each notched two hits and Matt DiOttavio drove in three runs for the Whippets. Starting pitcher Zach Griffin went five inning, fanned five and surrendered six hits. Two of those hits were to the Red Devils’ Trevor Dosenbach.

Bishop Shanahan 10, West Chester East 2 >> The Eagles scored nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings to race past the Vikings. Griffin Ceribelli (two hits, two RBI) and Michael Cleary (two hits, three RBI) paced the attack for Shanahan, and starter Connor Hill went six innings and scattered four hits. Nick Rostock and Jackson Reed drove in single runs for East.

Downingtown West 6, Coatesville 0 >> Starter Drew Turner allowed just two hits and fanned 10 in five-plus innings of work as the Whippets blanked the Red Raiders. Matt DiOttavio had two hits and drove in three runs, and Stephen Furia chipped in two hits for West. Ryan Jeffers had a double to pace Coatesville.

Boys Lacrosse

Bishop Shanahan 11, Downingtown 9 >> The Eagles improve to 7-0 overall, and 4-0 in the Ches-Mont league with the win. Shanahan outscored the Whippets 3-1 in the third period and held on.

Joe Devine led the way for Shanahan with four goals and two assists, and teammate Devin Mullen added three goals. J.P. Kennedy chipped in a goal and dished out two assists for the Eagles, who take on undefeated Downingtown East on Thursday.

West Chester Henderson 10, Kennett 5 >> The Warriors outscored the Blue Demons 4-0 in the middle quarters of a Ches-Mont triumph. Seamus Murphy paced all scorers with five, while Max Abrahams and Zach Abrahams each chipped in with two goals and an assist for Henderson. Cayden Killgore notched two goals and an assist for Kennett, while teammates Bo Freebery, John Rafferty and Colin Kelly each added single goals.

Conestoga 8, Haverford 4 >> The Pioneers raced out to a 5-1 halftime lead and cruised to a Central League win over the Fords. Holt McGinn scored a goal and won 11 of 13 face offs for ’Stoga. Clif Hawkins (four goals, assist) and Liam Donovan (two goals) also contributed for the Pioneers.

Softball

Oxford 17, Great Valley 1 >> The Hornets cruised past the Patriots in Ches-Mont action. Ashley Flynn led the way with three hits, including a home run, and two runs batted in. Ericka Ortega (3-for-3), Molly Friel (two hits), Sydney Kargulewicz (two hits) and Liliana Van Zyl (three RBI) also contributed for Oxford.

West Chester Rustin 4, Sun Valley 3 (9 innings) >> The Knights’ Ashley Falcone successfully executed a suicide bunt in the bottom of the ninth to score Joslyn Garner with the winning run in Ches-Mont action. Kelly Fricker and Lauren Greenwood each had two hits for Rustin, and Olivia Shuffler hit a home run.
