Roundup (March 25): Pottsgrove, Eckman edge Upper Merion 4-3 in PAC Frontier softball opener

Pottsgrove 4, Upper Merion 3

Pottsgrove got its PAC Frontier slate off to a strong start with a 4-3 victory at Upper Merion. Mikayla Eckman went the distance in the pitching circle, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out six. She also had two hits and reached base in all three of her plate appearances. Mackenzie Gray, Avery Gleason and Hayden Pysher each had a hit and scored a run for the Falcons.

Ava DiDonato started and pitched five innings for Upper Merion, allowing three earned runs with six strikeouts. Abby Volpe was 3-for-3 with two RBI for the Vikings, while Devon Maiden was 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI.

Pope John Paul II 15, Lansdale Catholic 5

Molly Houchins led the way in a dominant offensive performance for PJP, going 3-for-4 with three triples, two RBI and three runs scored. Abby Simmers (2-for-3, 3B, 3 R), Rylee Derecola (2-for-4, 2B, 2 R, 3 RBI) and Charlie Hallman (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) all contributed to the dominant victory. Lexi DiBricida pitched five innings for the Golden Panthers, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out seven and earning the win.

Perkiomen School 13, Kohelet Yeshiva 1

Kenna Tobin went 3-for-4 with a double and four runs scored and Lillian Kovaleski was 2-for-3 with four RBI in Upper Perk’s five-inning non-league win. Cameron McQuade added three hits and two RBI, while Kelsey McMillin and Camilla Hannigan-Christian had two RBI in the impressive offensive effort. Claudia Knowles threw five clean innings, yielding only a hit and an unearned run while striking out 12.

Souderton 7, Upper Perkiomen 2

Kaylyn Adair doubled and knocked in a run and Darby Gasda added an RBI single in a two-run fifth for Upper Perkiomen, but the damage had already been done by Souderton. Souderton scored once in the second, twice in the third and four more times in the fourth against starter Erin Gray. Just two of the seven runs allowed by Gray were earned, and she pitched all seven innings with two strikeouts. McKenna Schroding struck out 11 in the complete game victory for Souderton.

BASEBALL

Pottsgrove 14, Antietam 3

Gabe Rinda led a huge outburst from the Pottsgrove lineup with two hits and six RBI, while Luke Tyson was 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBI and Zayd Rogers chipped in three hits and two knocked in. Brandon McGinley (2B, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Carter Burg (3 BB, 4 R) and Ricky Scott (1-for-3, 2 R) all contributed in the 14-run effort. Rogers, Burg, Scott, Blayne Bainbridge and Owen Smith tossed an inning each on the mound, combining to allow only two hits and three unearned runs while striking out nine and walking four.

Fleetwood Area 4, Upper Perkiomen 2

Cole Pierce turned in a strong two-way performance for Upper Perkiomen, going 1-for-3 with an RBI double at the plate and tossing five innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts on the hill in a hard-luck loss.

Spring-Ford 7, Hazleton 2

Jake Witmer went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored and Micah Seitzinger had two hits and two runs scored in a winning non-league effort for the Rams. David Ruckman was 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot for Spring-Ford.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Upper Merion 15, Abington 5

Upper Merion raced out to a 6-1 advantage after one quarter and led 11-2 at halftime in an impressive non-league victory over Abington. Justin Besz notched five goals and two assists for the Vikings, with Kevin Roseland not far behind with four goals and two assists of his own. Collin McCormick and Kieran Lamey each produced multi-goal efforts with three and two, respectively, and Alejandro Nunez also found the back of the net. Ryan Becker won 19 of 23 face-offs and Nathan Uhl had six saves in the cage.

Boyertown 15, Governor MIfflin 2

Boyertown started out strong by scoring seven first-quarter goals and never letting up in a dominant non-league victory over Governor Mifflin. Mason Barndt led the attack with six goals and three assists, and Austin Bouthillette (three goals, assist) and Gio Daddario (two goals, assist) also contributed multi-goal efforts. Parker Anderson, Mike Palmiero, Brayden Kuhar and Jason Oakes also scored for the Bears. Logan Oakes made four saves in goal.

Pottsgrove 6, Archbishop Carroll 4

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Methacton 8, North Penn 4

Giada Catoia scored four times and Bella Catania added two goals and five draw controls for Methacton in a strong non-league win over North Penn. Alexa Diezel and Piper Evangelista also found the back of the net for the Warriors, while Calie Fisher played well in the cage with five saves.

Quinn Rodoff (three goals) and Emma Zeit scored in the losing effort for North Penn.

Northampton 11, Upper Perkiomen 10 (OT)

Abby Davidheiser led a potent offensive attack with five goals and an assist for Upper Perkiomen, while Maggie Milkowich and Abby Orsini each scored twice. Davidheiser added two draw controls, a groundball and three caused turnovers, and Milkowich won six draw controls, had three ground balls and caused two turnovers in solid all-around efforts for both players. Mia Schneider also scored for Upper Perk and Bella Knight made five saves in goal.

Pennridge 15, Perkiomen Valley 9

Perk Valley trailed by three goals at halftime before cutting it to a one-goal game after three quarters, narrowly missing out on a non-league comeback victory against Pennridge. Leah Pfeiffer had five goals and two assists and Holli Nuss scored twice for the Vikings. Grace Schaffner and Julia Foley also posted goals for Perk Valley, while Sydney McMonagle (2GB, 3CT, 4DC), Reagan McLoughlin (1CT, 4DC), Clair Ousey (1GB, 1CT) and Reagan Gault (2GB) all contributed in the loss. Charlotte Foster made nine saves in goal for the Vikings.

Marple Newtown 22, Pottsgrove 5

Christine Hires continued her strong start for Pottsgrove, scoring four of the Falcons’ goals in a non-league loss to Marple Newtown. Josie Wyatt had the other goal, and Maddie Miller and Kylie Willis combined to make four saves in the losing effort.
