SWIMMING: North Penn boys, Upper Dublin girls claim 3A titles, Springfield-Montco sweeps 2A at District 1 Championships

The North Penn boys and Upper Dublin girls claimed Class 3A team titles while Springfield-Montco swept both Class 2A crowns Saturday at the District 1 Swimming Championships at the Graham Aquatic Center in York.

The Knights got second-place finishes from Mason Potts in the 100 free and their 400 free relay along with Alexander Burns taking third in the 500 free on Day 2 of the meet to help the Knights top the Boys 3A standings with 318 points.

Conestoga was second with 223 and Central Bucks West placed third with 218 points.

Sophia Sileo-Magliari secured gold for the Upper Dublin girls Saturday in the 100 back with a time of 1:02.87 while the Cardinals’ 400 free relay earned second as UD captured the 3A team title with 261 points.

Hatboro-Horsham — led by Annie Jia, the Outstanding Swimmer of the Girls 3A meet — finished second with 181.5 points. Conestoga (146), Lower Merion (142) and North Penn (132) rounded out the top five.

Jia capped her districts teaming with Emmy Erikson, Megan Luddecke and Sarah Parker on the Hatters’ 400 free relay that won the event in a district meet record time of 3:24.58, breaking the previous mark of 3:24.71 set by Upper Dublin in 2019.

Friday, Jia — a Cal commit — won both the 200 individual medley (2:02.06) and 100 butterfly (53.83) and swam with Eloise Mothersbaugh, Erikson and Parker on HH’s first-place 200 free relay (1:34.25).

In Class 2A boys, Springfield cruised to the boys title with 552 points. Lower Moreland was second with 330 points.

Springfield’s Will Cross, who was named the Boys 2A Outstanding Swimmer, started Saturday winning the 100 free in 46.58 then swam anchor on the Spartans’ 400 free relay along with Sam Pugh, Michael Cooper and Gabe Fluehr that earned gold with a time of 3:15.80.

The Springfield girls won the Class 2A title by amassing 377 points. Mount St. Joseph placed second with 352 points, Villa Maria was third (221), Lower Moreland took fourth (218) and Gwynedd Mercy came in fifth (182).

Lower Moreland’s Esther Park earned Girls Class 2A Outstanding Swimmer honors, the senior winning the 100 breast in 1:04.81 Saturday while a day earlier earning first in the 200 individual medley (2:09.68) and helped the Lions’ 200 medley relay take second.

Conestoga’s Jake Wang was the Boys Class 3A Outstanding Swimmer, the Yale commit winning the 100 breast Saturday with a district-meet record time of 53.30, eclipsing the previous mark set in 2000 by six-time Olympic medalist Brendan Hansen of Haverford.

Wang was also a part of the Pioneers setting a new district meet record in winning the 400 free relay in 3:02.59, which bettered the 3:03.06 swam by North Penn in 2019. Friday, Wang won the 200 individual medley (1:47.36) and was on Stoga’s first-place 200 free relay (1:23.47).

North Penn took second behind Conestoga in Saturday’s 3A boys 400 free relay, the Knights’ quartet of Potts, Burns, Macek Vandermolen and Mason DiMauro finishing in 3:04.62. CB West’s Jimin Chung, Karl Linde, Connor Mangan and Derek Feldman were third in 3:08.83.

Potts took second in the 100 free in 45.02 while Feldman was third in 45.89. Springfield-Delco’s Jacob Johnson won the event in 44.51.

Mangan gave the Bucks a second-place finish in the 500 free relay with his time of 4:36.89. The Knights’ Burns took third in 4:39.11 with Wissahickon’s Reed Harris fourth in 4:40.66. Conesotga’s Can Yeniay won in 4:32.86.

West also got a fourth-place Saturday from Blaise Hofmann in the 100 back (50.22).

Plymouth Whitemarsh’s Brennan Coyle finished second behind Wang in the 100 breast, the Colonials senior hitting the wall in 55.29. Upper Dublin’s Toby Herzog was third in 56.09 with Abington’s John Franchetti fourth in 57.05.

In Girls Class 3A, Wissahickon’s Nora Weber claimed gold in the 500 free with a time of 4:51.62. North Penn’s Maddie Faikish — who won the 200 free Friday — placed second in 4:54.84 with Methacton’s Madison Wimmer earning bronze in 4:59.44.

Hatboro-Horsham’s Parker and UD’s Arina Vorobyeva were second and third, respectively in the 100 free, Parker finishing in 50.98 while Vorobyeva had a 51.11. Unionville’s Izzy Iwasyk won with a time of 50.65.

Williams earned the Cardinals second place in the 100 back with her effort of 56.32. Sileo-Magliari’s 1:02.87 won the 100 breast ahead of Souderton’s Jessica Burns, who took second at 1:03.41.

Upper Dublin’s 400 free relay of Williams, Olivia Auwarter, Alicia Taylor and Vorobyeva earned silver with a time of 2:28.57.

Cross led a Springfield top-three sweep in the Boys 2A 100 free — Cross’ winning mark of 46.58 followed by teammates Cooper (48.90) and Fluehr (49.37).

Saturday, the Spartans also received a second-place finish from Grey Line in the 100 back (56.23), third places by Ryan McKelvie in the 500 free (5:00.63) and Pugh in the 100 breast (1:01.06) with Logan Stum taking fourth in the 100 back (56.59).

Lower Moreland’s Martin Shum claimed gold in the 100 back with a time of 56:07 with the Lions’ going 1-2 in the 100 breast — Aiden Meehan winning 59.95 while Joshua Ferker was second in 1:00.45.

Ferker also earned silver in the 500 free with a time of 4:57.92 and teamed with Nicholas Sleptsov, Roman Kalandadze and Shum to give Lower Moreland second in the 400 free relay in 3:21.36.

In Class 2A girls, Springfield swimmers won two individual events Saturday to help the Spartans take the team title.

The Spartans’ Olivia Igou added to her gold Friday in the 50 free by winning the 100 free with a time of 53.44. Gracie Toland was first in the 100 back in 58.28.

Gwynedd Mercy’s Ella McManus won the 500 free in 5:22.00.

Mount St. Joseph captured gold in the 400 free relay, the team of Aurora Martin, Grace Detwiler, Rose Schmidt and Katie Scanlon winning in 3:38.42.

Schmidt finished second behind Park in the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.50. Springfield’s Anna Hendrzak was third in 1:09.18.

Mount also got silvers from Scanlon in the 100 free (53.61) and Detwiler in the 500 free (5:22.0) while Maya McCottry earned a bronze in the 100 back with her time of 1:01.78.
