Reading High to induct eight individuals, one team into its Athletic Hall of Fame

The inductees will be recognized at Friday’s football game and go into the Hall during a banquet Saturday

Eight individuals and one team will be inducted into the Reading High Athletic Hall of Fame at a banquet Saturday at Kraras Banquet Hall at 6 p.m.

The Hall’s 11th class — Romarr Mayne, Jeff Kantner, Richard (Dick) Drexler, Trenity Burdine, Lori (Pingitore) Sherman, Imani Brown, Jared Sadlowski, Sam Bryant and the 1977 football team — will be recognized during a ceremony at halftime of Friday’s football game against Penn Manor, which kicks off at 7 p.m. at Shirk Stadium. The class also will be honored at the Reading High Athletic Hall of Fame Golf Tournament Friday at Heidelberg CC, which starts at 10 a.m.

Here’s more on the inductees.

Mayne, a 2009 grad, was a standout sprinter in track and field who was a two-time All-Berks pick in the 100 and was named to the USATF Junior Olympics. He graduated from Shippensburg University, where he won three Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference individual titles and helped the Red Raiders win four team championships.

Kantner, a 1983 grad, was a member of the PIAA championship baseball team as a senior.

A catcher, he was drafted by the New York Mets following his senior season. He later played four seasons at Alvernia, where he was a member of the program’s first 20-win team.

Drexler, a 1956 grad, excelled in football, wrestling and track and field. He was a Big 33 selection as a senior, when he also won a District 3 wrestling title at 185 pounds. He earned a football scholarship to North Carolina State.

Burdine, a 2010 grad, was the Berks Player of the Year in boys basketball as a senior, when he averaged 17.7 points per game and also was a second-team All-State selection in Class 4A. He helped the Red Knights win two District 3 championships. In college, he played three seasons at Siena and one at Georgetown College in Kentucky, He has played professionally for the Reading Rebels.

Sherman, a 1980 grad, was a recipient of the school’s Six Letter Award after receiving eight varsity letters as a member of the cross country, swimming and track and field teams. She still holds the school record in the 800 in track. In college, she ran track and cross country at Bloomsburg, where she set the school record in the 1500 as a senior. She is a coach for the Girls On the Run at Riverside Elementary School.

Brown, a 2012 grad, finished his high school track and field career with three District 3 Class 3A gold medals and one PIAA gold in the triple jump (as well as a silver), and another District 3 gold and a state fourth-place medal in the long jump. He competed with the U.S. National Team in 2011 in the Youth World Championship in Lille, France. He finished sixth in the triple jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships to earn All-American honors in 2013 at the University of Alabama before finishing his career at Pittsburgh.

Sadlowski, a 1993 grad, was a three-sport athlete, participating in football, wrestling and baseball. In football, he was an All-State third-team selection as a wide receiver as a senior, when he helped the Red Knights share the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 1 title. In wrestling, he went 50-5. In baseball, he was a four-year starter at catcher and the captain of the 1993 Berks championship team. He went on to play baseball at Penn State.

Bryant, a 2002 grad, was a Big School All-State selection in football as a senior, when he scored 19 touchdowns. He played safety, linebacker and running back. He went on to play at the University of Pittsburgh.

The 1977 football team won the first outright conference title in school history, finishing undefeated in the Central Penn League. The Red Knights finished 8-3.
