Mercury roundup (Sept. 18): Smolij tees up Owen J. Roberts field hockey for win over Phoenixville

Owen J. Roberts 2, Phoenixville 1

Mira Smolij set up both Wildcat goals, including the game’s decisive score from Maddie Tillou as Owen J. Roberts edged Phoenixville, 2-1, in a PAC cross-divisional game Monday.
Larissa Schell scored OJR’s opening goal while Natalia Thomas found the cage for the Phantoms.
OJR led in corners 11-8. Jaz Campbell made 10 saves for OJR while Corrine Bull stopped 12 shots for Phoenixville.

Methacton 16, Pottstown 0

Six Warriors factored in on multiple goals in a one-sided PAC cross-divisional matchup Monday.
Playing a role on multiple goals for Methacton were Carmela Maro (2G,1A), Ceci Rehak (1G,3A),
Elena Weychert (2G), Lily DeWan (2G,1A), Lizzie Mun (2G) and Renee Blake (2G,1A). Adrianna Hopple,
Olivia Feliciani, Hannah Graf, Alexa Catoia and Madison Charles also tallied goals.

Spring-Ford 6, Pope John Paul II 2

Elise Reagan and Maddie friend scored two goals apiece to lead the Rams over the Golden Panthers in PAC crossover action. Nina Scott and Marissa Cagliola (two assists) both found the back of the cage as well. Erin Zimmerman, Emily Frey and Aubrey Grossman all added assists.

Katie Nilles scored both goals for Pope John Paul II. Norah Kirsch made five saves on nine shots for Spring-Ford while Ava Parkinson came up with 16 saves on 22 shots for the Golden Panthers. The Rams had 11 corners while Pope John Paul II had nine.

BOYS SOCCER

Perkiomen Valley 5, Pottsgrove 1

Perk Valley kicked into gear with the game tied 1-1 and rolled out to a PAC crossover victory Monday. After a quiet start to the match, both teams scored off miscues. Pottsgrove misplayed a corner into their own net and PV conceded an own goal to level the score at 1-1. Lawson Finger finished a Christian Campbell cross just before half to give PV a 2-1 lead. PV was able to pull away in the second half with an additional goal from Lawson Finger and tallies from Matteo LoRegio and Nathan Brown. Christian Campbell played a hand in three goals with a goal and two assists. Chris Saboe-Moore also had a helper.

Pottsgrove got nine-save goalkeeping from Ryan Smith. The Falcons didn’t register a shot on target.

Upper Perkiomen 4, Boyertown 2

Upper Perk rode a super start to a PAC crossover victory over Boyertown Monday. UP jumped out to an early lead on goals by Jackson Smith and Logan Watkins (goal, assist) in the first five minutes of the contest and upped its lead to three before halftime when Ethan Barr ran onto a through ball from Matthew Fisher (two assists). The Bears pulled two back in the second half, one via Macade Knoblauch penalty kick. Evan Sands had eight saves for the Tribe.

Methacton 10, Pottstown 0

Methacton claimed its first win over the season with a rout of Pottstown Monday. Goal scorers for the Warriors were Kristian Bauer, Matthew Chung, Logan Courtney, Riel Jacobson (2), Cole Kleger, Ethan Kumar, Damian Mularz, Dishawn Shakes and Silas Stemler.

Spring-Ford 2, Pope John Paul II 0

Spring-Ford scored a goal in each half and went on to blank PJP in PAC crossover play. Jason Krum registered 15 saves for PJP.

GIRLS SOCCER

Spring-Ford 1, Pope John Paul II 0

Spring-Ford maintained its unbeaten record (8-0) with a hard-fought PAC crossover win at PJP Monday. Molly Kennedy was assisted by Maddie Budka on the game’s lone goal and Olivia Nield needed three saves to earn the shutout.

Perkiomen Valley 2, Pottsgrove 0

Pottsgrove goalkeeper Ella Smith put up plenty of resistance with 20 saves, but Giavanna Marciano managed to get two goals past the Falcons’ standout to send PV to the PAC cross-division win.

Marciano tallied at the 28:52 mark, assisted by Claire Tremba, then doubled her total four minutes from full time, Rain Boyd adding the assist.

Olivia Hulayew needed three saves for the clean sheet.

Owen J. Roberts 1, Phoenixville 0

Emerson Storti scored off a corner kick at the 13:07 mark of the first half to send the Wildcats past the Phantoms in a PAC crossover matchup. OJR goalie Abby Smith saved all three shots she faced for the shutout.

Boyertown 3, Upper Perkiomen 1

Alina Friz netted two goals to help deliver the Bears a big PAC cross-divisional win over the reigning PAC champions. Emily Walter also scored for Boyertown, which led 2-0 at the half.
Sarah Fisher scored Upper Perk’s goal.

Methacton 7, Pottstown 1

Aubrey Beaugard scored a hat trick for the Warriors while Kendall Ricca (assist), Maddy Washburn (assist), Mia Chan (assist) and Sage Bowman (assist) all added a goal each. Marlie Klein, Abby Masotta and Alyssa Lineen added assists. The Trojans scored with two minutes left in the game. Methacton outshot Pottstown 35-1.

Spring-Ford 3, Methacton 2 (22-25, 26-24, 26-24, 12-25, 14-16)

Outside hitters Lauren Angelucci and Lila Olsen split the offensive workload for the Rams in a five-set, marquee PAC Liberty win over Methacton. Angelucci produced 16 kills, three blocks and two digs while Olsen logged 15 kills, six blocks and one dig. Senior setter Dannica Fuller tallied 16 assists, served seven aces, registered five digs and tacked on three kills. Sophomore libero Alanna Bricker made six digs.

Methacton was led by Makayla Batten with nine kills and three blocks. Caroline Welsh also logged nine kills and two blocks while Rachel Pettine tallied 35 assists, two aces, a block and a kill. Libero Mianna Ly made 16 digs to go with three aces.

Pope John Paul II 3, Phoenixville 0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-14)

The Golden Panthers continued their regular season roll to improve to 7-0.

Leading the way for PJP was Natalie Ricevuto (12 kills), Hutton Cordrey (9 kills, 7 digs, 13 service points), Maeve Gallagher (6 digs, 13 service points), Madison Monahan (23 assists, 13 service points, 3 digs) and Gabrilla Cooper (14 digs).

Stat leaders for Phoenixville in the loss were Kristen Brown (2 kills, 1 dig), Kailey Hudy (2 aces, 6 assists, 4 digs), Gianna Buce (8 digs, 2 aces) and Zoe Monson (9 digs).

Octorara 3, Daniel Boone 0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-17)

Kaitlyn Salada logged 10 kills, a block and two aces for Octorara. Sara Meyer made seven kills with an ace and Aliana Fisher made 25 assists.
Madeleine Scherzer led the Blazers with 12 killas and Lauren Goldschmidt added five. Olivia Darrohn had 19 assists, two digs and an ace.

Boyertown 3, Perkiomen Valley 0 (25-20, 25-18, 26-24)

Lauren McKeon paved the way for the Bears with 10 kills in a straight-set PAC Liberty win. Ava Hurter logged seven kills and Abby Dornblaser tacked on another five. Jenna Christman and Kyra Neiswender served a pair of aces apiece. Tori Obarow made four blocks while Hailey Jones had three blocks and Madelyn Weaver had two.
