High Schools: Episcopal survives untimed finish in field hockey win over Carroll

Paige McMeekin’s hat trick sparked Episcopal Academy to a thrilling 3-2 nonleague win over Carroll in a showdown of top notch field hockey talent Monday.

The Patriots had an untimed corner kick after the final horn sounded but after a deep breath, the Churchwomen cleared it to secure the dramatic decision. On an untimed penalty corner, play isn’t stopped until a score or the ball is pushed out of the scoring circle.

Laura Wineburg and Sienna Golden scored goals for Carroll.

Goalies Fiona Conboy (AC) and Isabella Andrews (EA) stopped seven shots each.

Carroll’s Beth Wineburg and Morgan Wood each had an assist.

Tennis

Carter Yearley won in straight sets at first singles and Episcopal Academy won three of the four doubles matches to register a 4-3 win over Haddonfield in nonleague tennis Monday.

Izzy Rozes and Mel Kryukov won in straight sets at first doubles for the Churchwomen, Shelby Pasternak and Velina Feuzue rallied for a 5-7, 7-6, 10-7 win at second doubles and Julia Baggini and Elizabeth Hershey bounced back to triumph at fourth doubles, 3-6, 6-4, 10-4.

Delco Christian 5, Academy Park 0 >> The Knights won all of their matches in straight sets to fend off host Academy Park (1-2).

Sydney Stevens, Maggie Iott and Lily Elliot triumphed in singles for the Knights. Sonya Curyto and Leah Conde and  Lily Peters and Kaylee Kroll got the job done at doubles.

In the Central League:

Garnet Valley 7, Marple Newtown 0 >> The host Jaguars rolled to victory behind Taryn Law, Sanjana Balaji and Catherine Qian all prevailing in straight sets in singles.

Winning in straight sets in doubles were Talon Law and Angela Pan, Haley Maloney and Anita FardSanei, Sristi Tripathy and Alice Zhang and Sofia Tolotta and Sara Lennon.

Volleyball

Keira Murray registered five service aces and 18 assists, Julia Pfleger six kills and four aces to lead Chichester to a 3-0 win over Collegium Charter in nonleague action.

Riley Harris (two aces) and Carley Leonard (block, two aces) had three kills each, Morgan Wood nine kills for the Eagles, who prevailed by set scores of 25-11, 25-10 and 25-15.

Lillie Shaw had two kills, one block and two aces, Julia Walsh one kill.

Strath Haven 3, West Chester Rustin 0 >> The Panthers took the spirited match by scores of 25-13, 25-20, 25-23.

Captains Jillian Surkis (11 kills, two blocks) and Lauren McGinn (seven kills, four aces) helped win the day for the Panthers. Aislin O’Neill controlled the back row with 15 digs and 20 receptions. Blockers Sophia Hoppe, Sophia Andrews-Sullivan and Violet Abrahamsson all had two snuffs apiece to hold off Rustin in the third set.

Cardinal O’Hara 3, Springfield 0 >> Star senior Jasmine Sullivan sparked the Lady Lions, who won by set scores of 25-15, 25-18, 25-20.

Sullivan had 10 kills, 14 assists, eight digs and two aces. Sophomore Kerigan Patterson added eight kills, six digs and three aces while junior Julia Riley anchored the defense with 13 digs.

Junior Bridget O’Reilly dished out 22 assists in her varsity debut along with sophomore Michelle Eburuoh (seven kills, two blocks) and freshmen Molly McGuinn (eight kills, two blocks).

Lower Merion 3, Sun Valley 0 >> The Vanguards dropped a tough match to the Aces as they were defeated by set scores of 18-25, 18-25, 10-25.

Olivia Hoy held up the back row for SV with 11 digs. Jenna Jones contributed six assists, nine kills and 11 digs. Sophia Kowalski also had six assists for the Vanguards while Shannon McGroarty added six kills and 10 digs.

Girls Soccer

In a nonleague game, Sun Valley rolled to a 5-0 win over Upper Darby thanks largely to a hat trick by Alison Riley.

Nora Novotni and Sam Rowley buried the other goals for the Vanguards while goalie Sarah Kunze secured the clean sheet.

Strath Haven 5, Upper Merion 1 >> Kiera Bergin, Gia Chaves, Annie Dignazio, Marley Feinberg and Ava Hurwitz all found the back of the net for the visiting Panthers, who busted the game open after leading just 1-0 at the intermission. Chelsea Smith got Upper Merion’s goal.
