Daniel Boone grad Chris Guiliano completed his breakout performance at the U.S. swimming championships with a seventh-place finish in the 50-meter freestyle Saturday at Indianapolis.
Guiliano, a rising junior at Notre Dame, had earned a spot in the upcoming world championships with his second-place finish in the 100 free earlier in the week.
He went into Saturday’s 50 free seeded 22nd with a time of 22.44. He swam the sixth-fastest time in the morning preliminaries, a personal-best 22.08, to qualify for the finals.
Guiliano then lowered his personal best to 21.96 in the final. Ryan Held won in 21.50.
His performance in the 100 free earned him his spot at worlds — in that event and as part of the United States’ 4×100 relay — and opened a lot of eyes.
Guiliano finished the 100 free in a personal-best 47.98, surging from sixth after 50 meters and getting touched out by Jack Alexy (47.93). He had been seeded 22nd at 49.17.
He also competed in the 200 free. He placed 30th following the preliminaries at 1:49.64 and did not advance. He came in seeded 39th.
The world championships will be held July 14-30 at Fukuoka, Japan.
Guiliano already had earned a berth to next year’s U.S. Olympic Trials.
