Kennett’s Jaffe wins national division, earns spot on international team

Kennett High School junior, Haylie Jaffe, recently won the 61kg class in the U17 division at the USA Wrestling/US Marine Corps Women’s Nationals in Spokane, WA.

Jaffe went 7-0 in the event, outscoring her opposition 44-7, including 4-2 and 8-2 victories over Illinois’ Candace Diduch in the Best-of-three finals. With the victory, Jaffe earned a spot on the USAW World Team, and will compete at the United World Wrestling U17 World Championship in Istanbul, Turkey in August.

Baseball

Downingtown West 14, Bishop Shanahan 1 (5 innings) >> The Whippets rallied for seven runs in the second inning and cruised to a Ches-Mont win. Quinn Henicle led the way at the plate by going 3-for-3 and driving in six runs. Michael Jaszcak and James Harple each had two RBI for West, and pitcher Drew Turner scattered five hits to get the win. Eric MacCluen had two hits for the Eagles.

Great Valley 5. West Chester Rustin 3 >> Julian Conners led the Patriots with two hits and two runs batted in. Owen Crowe notched five strikeouts for the Knights.

Sun Valley 6, Oxford 1 >> The Hornets managed just five hits and dropped a Ches-Mont clash to the Vanguards. Asher Williston and Ben Palita each had two hits to lead Oxford.

Softball

Oxford 10, Sun Valley 0 (5 innings) >> Pitcher Cece Figueroa notched a complete-game one-hitter to power the Hornets in Ches-Mont action. McKenna Frank blasted a two-run homer and Natalia Donofrio went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs for Oxford.

Downingtown West 10, Bishop Shanahan 0 (6 innings) >> The Whippets broke open a tight battle thanks to a six-run rally in the fifth inning. Pitcher Addison Carter allowed just one hit and fanned 16 batters to pace West. Emma Ahlborn (2-3, 2 RBI) and Julia Roth (3 RBI) led the way at the plate for the Whippets.

Downingtown East 9, Avon Grove 0 >> Tied at 0-0 in the fifth inning, Hailey Long ignited the offense with a two-run double. The Cougars added five runs in the inning and four more in the sixth. Lilly Waterer went 3-for-4 and Jade Jenkins added two hits.  2 singles and scored 2 runs. Pitcher Rachael Schumann went the distance with 14 strikeouts and allowed just three hits. Schumann reached a milestone during this game of 100 strikeouts for the season.

West Chester Rustin, 13, Great Valley 0 (5 innings) >> Emily Gillis went the distance, notched 10 strikeouts and allowed just three hits for the Knights. Lainey Lacey drove in seven with a solo homer and a grand slam, and Jenna Kraft added three extra base hits. Sarah Yost went five innings for the Pats and struck out five.

Coatesville 16, West Chester East 2 (5 innings) >> The Raiders pounded out 16 hits on their way to a Ches-Mont win. Ashlynn Sherman earned the win in the circle, and delivered two hits, and four RBI from the plate. Danielle Sweigart and Kaitlyn Ward each added two hits for Coatesville.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Coatesville 18, Upper Darby 1 >> The Red Raiders raced out to an 8-0 first quarter lead en route to a lopsided non-league victory. Eleven different players scored for Coatesville, including three goals by Owen Ellis (plus four assists) and Josh Van Orden (one assist). Derek Cooper, Jake Van Orden and Magnus Clouser each added two goals for the Raiders.

Boys Tennis

Oxford 5, Coatesville 0 >> The Hornets swept the Raiders and all five matches were in straight sets. In singles action, Jacob Horton, Liam Hale and Luke Schoessler prevailed, with Horton topping Coatesville’s Will McLorie 6-0, 6-1.

College

Women’s Tennis

Immaculata 6, Marywood 3 >> The Macs won their final Atlantic East Conference regular season match to finish in second place with a 3-1 record. Senior Annamarie Degnan prevailed in singles and teamed with Pamela Kontaras to win in first doubles.

Men’s Tennis

Immaculata 6, Marywood 3 >> With a win in the final Atlantic East Conference regular season match, the Macs ended with a 2-2 mark and third place overall. Jason Watts had a hand in both wins, winning 6-3, 6-1 in singles and teaming up with Troy Watts to get a doubles victory, 8-5.
