Mercury Roundup (March 30): Pope John Paul II girls lacrosse edges Phoenixville in OT

GIRLS LACROSSE

Pope John Paul II 10, Phoenixville 9 (OT)

Highlights: Jill Cobaugh scored four goals and McKayla Elison came up with 17 saves to lead the Golden Panthers to a PAC Frontier Division win Thursday over the visiting Phantoms. Ava Zepp had 3 goals and an assist for PJP and Cate Mink and Sarah Mink scored one each. Elena Colliluori, Grace Mondill  and Becky Fanelli each had an assist for the Panthers (2-1 Frontier, 3-3 overall). The Phantom dropped to 1-1 in the PAC Frontier and 1-5 overall.

Pottsgrove 12, Pottstown 4

Highlights: Taylor Fiorini scored four goals and Christine Hires three to lead the Falcons to a PAC Frontier Division win Thursday at Pottstown. Hannah Kumpf and Cecilia Burg added two goals each for Pottsgrove (1-1 PAC Frontier and PAC, 2-4 overall) and Emily Sorg scored one. Brynn McClune did all of the scoring for the Trojans (0-2, 0-2, 0-4) and Daishawnia Dean made 12 saves.

Boyertown 17, Perkiomen Valley 9

Highlights: The Bears outscored the visiting Vikings 13-3 in the second half of a PAC Liberty Division win. Alina Fritz led host Boyertown (1-0 PAC, 1-1 overall) with six goals and Delaney Fox scored five. Hannah Adamski and Peyton Shellaway added two goals each and Cori Bieber and Bailey Leatherman one apiece for the Bears. Fritz and Hailey Gruber had two assists and Bieber, Fox, Adamski, Leatherman each had one. In goal, Elli Ferraro made four saves and Teagan Tyson five for Boyertown.

Owen J. Roberts 18, Spring-Ford 2

Highlights: Cailin Harrington, Ashly White, Avery Wentzel, Rachel Sbei, and Colby Wasson led OJR’s shutdown defensive effort while Gabbi Koury (6G, 3A) and Alexa Vogelman (5G, 3A) drove a dominant scoring day.

BOYS LACROSSE

Pottsgrove 13, Conrad Weiser 1

Highlights: Jack Silvestri had five goals and an assist and Jackson Wescoat scored three times to lead the Falcons (2-4) to a non-league win on Thursday. Jake Coburn added two goals for Pottsgrove, Bryce Caffrey had a goal and three assists and Spencer Brice and Adam Hofstaedter each scored one. Dom Sithens made two saves for the Falcons. Ben Heil scored for the visiting Scouts (0-3).

Boyertown 19, Governor Mifflin 4

Highlights: Aidan McFalls scored seven goals and Mason Barndt five along with four assists for the Bears on Thursday afternoon. Ryder Gehris, Jason Oakes (1 assist), Luke Heimbach (1 assist), Brayden Kuhar and Tyler Diffenderfer added one goal each for visiting Boyertown. Diffenderfer also had four assists and Gio Daddario had two in the non-league win. Also for the Bears (4-0), Wyatt Yerger won 23 of 25 faceoffs and goalkeeper Mike McMahon made five saves. For the Mustangs, Drew Mathieu and Clayton Reynolds each scored twice and Daylen Morey made 17 saves.

Wilson 8, Perkiomen Valley 4

Highlights: Seamus Breslin scored three goals to lead the Bulldogs to a non-league win Thursday at Perkiomen Valley. Cohen Renninger and Brady Rigdon added two goals each for Wilson (3-1) and Ben Rada scored one. Shea Fusco (1 assist), Luke Hanlon (1 assist), Bryce Coletta and Drew Donato scored for PV (0-3) and Connor Maclin had an assist. Jack Leddy made nine saves for the Vikings.

 

BASEBALL

Owen J. Roberts 14, Pope John Paul II 1 (5 inn)

Highlights: Will Hakun worked wonders on the mound and at bat with a two-hit pitching performance coupled with a two-hit (triple), four-RBI afternoon to lead OJR to a PAC crossover win over PJP Thursday.

Tristan Dietrich and Zach Brockner were also hitting stars for the Wildcats. Dietrich was 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI while Brockner was 2-for-3 with an RBI. 

Billy Fitzgerald’s solo home run was PJP’s sole highlight.

Daniel Boone 9, Whitehall 0

Highlights: Ethan Rissmiller took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing a single to pinch hitter Dylan Koury to lead the Blazers (2-1) to a non-league win Thursday over the visiting Zephyrs (3-1). Rissmiller threw six innings and allowed  just the one hit and a walk and struck out four. Conner McGough went 2-for-3 for Boone with a double, Dylan Schueler homered and drove in a pair of runs, Mason Walter doubled and Christian Eckstein tripled and knocked in three. 

SOFTBALL

Owen J. Roberts 11, Pope John Paul II 1 (5 innings)

Highlights: Sophia Cerimele homered and doubled for the Wildcats in a home PAC crossover win Thursday afternoon. Rachel Epps (2-for-3), Liza Flavin and Bella Winnick all doubled as part of OJR’s 11-hit attack.  Amelia Atkins and Ashlyn Kunkle combined for the win. The Wildcats raised their record to 2-1 (1-0 PAC) while the Golden Panthers fell to 0-3 (0-1 PAC). 

Pottsgrove 11, Upper Merion 1 (6 innings)

Highlights: Mikayla Eckman allowed only three hits and an unearned run and homered as the Falcons defeated visiting Upper Merion in the PAC Frontier Division opener for both teams on Thursday. Bailey Pysher went 4-for-4 for Pottsgrove (3-1), Lizzie McAllister had two hits and scored three times and Avery Gleason had two hits and knocked in three.The Vikings are now 1-3 overall.

Methacton 5, Unionville 2

Highlights: Courtney Freese threw a two-hitter for the Warriors in a non-league win over visiting Unionville. Mady Polanski and Meghan Lineen each had two hits and Caroline Cherekos doubled and knocked in two runs for Methacton (2-1).
