
The Bishop Shanahan High School girls basketball team defeated District 2 champion Pittston Area, 43-35, Wednesday, in the second round of the PIAA 5A state tournament. Sami Blumenthal tallied 15 points to lead the Eagles, the third-place finisher in the District 1 5A tournament. Bishop Shanahan advances to the PIAA 5A state quarterfinals Saturday, where it will face District 12 champion Archbishop Wood, who defeated District 1 5A runnerup Villa Maria Academy in its PIAA 5A second round contest Wednesday.
Boys’ basketball
New Castle 65, Downingtown West 56 >> In this second round contest in the PIAA 6A state tournament, the Whippets, the fourth-place finisher in the District 1 6A tourney, fell to District 7 runnerup New Castle Wednesday. New Castle advances to the state quarterfinals against District 3 champion Reading, while the season en ded for the Whippets (20-8).
Boys’ tennis
Downingtown West 4, Perkiomen Valley 3 >> The Whippets got singles victories from Cash Bailey and Jack Sheldon as well as a first doubles win by Rachit Bajpai and Aditya Kadiyala.
Oxford 7, Chichester 0 >> The Hornets got straight set wins in all three of their singles matches, including Jacob Horton (first), Liam Hale (second) and Luke Schoessler (third).
