Coatesville, WC East, Shanahan basketball squads advance in PIAA state tourney

Boys’ basketball
Coatesville 68, Scranton 58 >> The Red Raiders (19-9), the ninth-place finisher in the District 1 6A tournament, defeated District 2 champion Scranton in the first round of the PIAA 6A state tournament Saturday at Scranton High School. Coatesville will advance to play North Penn (19-8), the eighth-place finisher in District 1 6A, on Wednesday.
West Chester East 52, East Stroudsburg South 47 >> The Vikings (18-9), the fifth-place finisher in the District 1 5A tournament, defeated District 11 champion East Stroudsburg South Saturday to advance to the second round of the PIAA 5A state tournament. In the second round, the Vikings will play District 12 runnerup Archbishop Ryan, who beat West Chester Rustin, 83-46, in its first-round state tournament contest Friday.

Girls’ basketball
Bishop Shanahan 68, Bangor 36 >> The Eagles, third-place finishers in the District 1 5A tournament, defeated host Bangor, the District 11 runnerup, Saturday to advance to the second round of the PIAA 5A state tournament. Shanahan will face District 2 champion Pittston Area High School Wednesday in the second round of the state tourney.

Indoor track
Rustin rolls at Nike Nationals >> At the Nike Indoor Nationals in New York City, several West Chester Rustin athletes gave notable performances. Ellie Keefer achieved All-American honors by finishing sixth in the 5K race. Ava Alexander was 13th in the girls 400 meter run (57.54) and seventh in the triple jump (39-7.25). The Rustin girls 4×200 relay team of Keturah Darwon, Alexander, Joss Barkman and Brooke Kruger became All-Americans by finishing sixth in the finals (1:42.90). Rustin’s other girls 4×200 of Ryan Layton, Macayla Subers, Sidney Sagullo, and Julia Snelling clocked 1:50.57 in the emerging elite section. The Golden Knights’ boys 4×200 of Julian Irving, Lucas Band, Yiannis Makris and Harry Davis finished 20th in the Emerging Elite section (1:35.27). Maddie Miller ran an indoor PR in the 800 (2:15.78), finishing 22nd.
Raiders run at New Balance >> The Coatesville boys 4×200 relay of Robert Turner, Amir Haskett, Donte London and Isaiah Brightman competed at the New Balance Nationals Friday, and beat their school record and won their heat with a time of 1:28.93. The quartet finished 14th overall.
