Wrestling: Sun Valley brings home Gov. Mifflin title for holidays

It has been quite the start to the season for Sun Valley.

The Vanguards picked up their second team title at a tournament with a dominating performance at the Governor Mifflin Holiday Tournament last weekend. Sun Valley scored 249.5 team points. Cape Henlopen of Delaware was second with 171. The Vanguards had won the Ches-Mont League championship to open the season.

Sun Valley had 11 wrestlers earn medals, including three individual champions and three second-place finishers.

Hunter Delaney (127), Brecken Strickland (133) and Brandon Carr (145) were the individual champions. Tim Kearney (114), David Voghel (139) and Alexander Gable-Williams (152) each placed second.

Delaney (10-1) went 4-0 with three wins by fall and an overtime victory over Upper Perkiomen’s Branden Rozanski in the final. Strickland (14-0) pinned Ashton Wittenberg of Plymouth Whitemarsh to complete a 4-0 run at 133. Three of his victories were by fall. Carr (14-0) defeated Cocalico’s Aiden Swann, 7-1, to win the 145-pound crown. He won his first three matches by fall.

Kearney went 3-1 at 114, winning twice by pin and once by major decision. Voghel also went 3-1 with three victories by fall. Gable-Williams recorded a pin and two decisions to finish second at 152 pounds.

Josh Deorio battled back after a loss in the quarterfinals with four straight wins by pin to finish third at 107. Chase Thompson went 4-1 to place third at 215. William Cadden went 4-2 to finish fourth at 160. Ronald Weaver (189) finished fifth, and Alex Alvarez (172) was eighth for the Vanguards.

Haverford had five medal winners at Governor Mifflin. Luca Romasco (172) placed fifth. Micah Lozano (107) and Anderson Sreng (215) finished seventh, and Kieran Gillespie (114) and Brennan Kramp (145) were eighth.

Richard Goerlach of Upper Darby placed sixth at 107.

Strath Haven’s Ben Farabaugh beat Donegal’s Nicholai Brotzman, 3-0, to win the 215-pound title at the MyHouse Trojan Wars at Chambersburg. Farabaugh went 5-0 with two pins. He won his last three matches 4-2, 3-2 and 2-0 to raise his season record to 14-1.

All-Delco Sam Milligan was the only other place-winner for the Panthers. He was sixth at 189, going 5-3 in the two-day tourney.

Ridley came away with the team title at the Phil Carbonetta Holiday Tournament at Marple Newtown. The Green Raiders posted 204 points to top the host Tigers (180) for the crown.

Chris Nesbitt (139), Rocco Hartfuss (152) and David Rainey (160) came away with individual titles. Nesbitt and Rainey both went 3-0, while Hartfuss was 2-0. Nick Dellarocca (127), Claudel Pierre-Louis (189) and Sevon Morris (285) placed second for the Green Raiders.

Julian Noel (121) and Tom Wickham (133) came away with third-place medals while Luke Pallandino (172) was fourth. Joe Weber (145) was fifth and Nostradomas Raeder (152) and Sencee Dikenah (285) were sixth.

The host Tigers placed 10 wrestlers on the medals stand. Jimmy Hally (172) and Louie DiLuzio (189) were individual champions, while Brett Cowan (215) placed second. Will Evans (127), Michael Pantalone (145) and Rory Peterson (152) finished third. Halen Jackson (121) and Dean Lyoun (133) were fourth. Josh Tiger-Wesley (285) finished fifth and Tyler Carroll (127) was sixth.

Penn Wood also had a solid day at Marple. Taiwo Ogaji (145) was second. Malik Barkor (139), Kehinde Mogaji (152), Khalil Medina (189), Aarion Hill (215) and Jaron Polk (285) all placed fourth. Victory Kellchi-Nwaogu (189) took fifth and Hawa Konate (121) was sixth.

Garnet Valley’s Ethan Bliss went 3-3 to finish seventh at 133 pounds at the Bethlehem Holiday Classic. All three of his victories came by fall. Teammate Dylan Bledsoe (285) went 3-2 and was eliminated in the fourth round of consolations.

Radnor’s Akahi Heywood took second at 107 pounds in the Neil Turner Memorial Holiday Classic at Conestoga Valley High School. Heywood won his first four matches, two by fall, to reach the final. Zach Fluck (133) and Anton Skvortsov (215) both went 4-2 and finished seventh.

Interboro had three place winners at the Ralph Wetzel Classic at Hatboro-Horsham. Gavin Olivia went 3-1 to place second at 139 pounds. Anthony Lascio fought back to finished fourth at 121 pounds. He went 6-2 in the tournament. Kyle Cramphorn placed seventh at 215 pounds.

Springfield had two wrestlers earn medals at the Wetzel Classic. Tommy Rush placed fourth at 152 and Tristen Cuellar was fourth at 215. Both wrestlers went 4-2.

Episcopal Academy’s Jack Signor and Vern Holley earned medals in the Prep Slam in Atlanta. Signor, a freshman, was third at 106 pounds. Holley, a senior, took fourth at 215. Signor went 4-1 with all four wins by fall, three in 49 seconds or less. Holley was 5-2 with all five victories by pin.
