Dock Mennonite blanks MaST II, punches ticket to states

TOWAMENCIN >> Dock Mennonite finished district play with an exclamation point, but the Pioneers’ story may be just beginning.

“They’re not done yet,” said a smiling Stacey Vaitis-Dubost, coach of the District 1-A Champs. “The Philly area’s doing really well right now so it’s pretty exciting — the Union, the Phillies…The girls are feeding off that energy so they’re ready.”

The Pioneers bolted to a 6-0 halftime lead, ensuring a running clock in the second half. A fine season came to an end for a young but up-and-coming program in MaST II.

The Pioneers kept the ball in the Voyagers’ end for almost the entire first half.

Dock’s passes were on point and shots found their target. Kenzie Derstine scored twice, and Olivia Moyer, Abby Mellinger, Eden Loux and Shelby Lapp also had goals to give Dock a 6-0 lead at the break.

“They were connecting well, they were communicating, they were having fun,” Vaitis-Dubost said of her squad. “We have a lot of prep to get ready for Tuesday but they’re going in the right direction.”

“We’re pretty excited, coming off a real battle against Faith,” Vaitis-Dubost said. “The girls had good energy and were positive and they got back to having fun and enjoying it. And that’s all that matters. We’re preparing for next week. They keep saying ‘we’re state-bound,’ so we’re getting there.

“We’re happy that we’re healthy and sickness is pretty much gone. The energy’s there and they’re excited.”

Dock will open PIAA play Tuesday, against the District 11 Champ.
