Mercury Roundup (Oct. 26): Spring-Ford field hockey pulls off District 1-3A upset

FIELD HOCKEY

Spring-Ford 4, Wissahickon 1

The Rams advanced to the District 1-3A quarterfinals with a 4-1 road upset of No. 2 seed Wissahickon on Wednesday afternoon. Julia Corropolese tied the score at 1-1 midway through the third quarter and Maddie Friend scored twice in the fourth and assisted on a goal by Nina Scott. No. 18 Spring-Ford (13-9) will visit No. 7 Central Bucks West, a 6-1 winner over Neshaminy, on Friday with the winner earning one of the district’s seven berths in the PIAA Class 3A Tournament.

The Bears had their season end in the second round of the District 1-3A Tournament for the second year in a row with a 4-0 loss at No. 8 seed Garnet Valley Wednesday afternoon. No. 9 seed Boyertown (17-4-1), coming off its first PAC championship in 20 years, will lose nine seniors.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Mid-Atlantic Prep League championships

Hill School senior Ginta Harada placed fourth at the MAPL championships with a time of 17:02.40. Other runners for the Blues included Liam Mpofu (23rd), Richard Liu (29th), Ian Chow (35th) and Patrick Dunn (39th). Blair Academy’s Isaac Greene won the race with a time of 15:56.90. Hun School finished first and The Hill School placed sixth.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Mid-Atlantic Prep League championships

Colette Zidek led Hill School runners with a seventh-place finish at the MAPL championships. Lauren Kuppinen (10th), Cecille Wegman (18th), Fiona Shen (22nd) and Michelle Lawrence (24th) rounded out the top five for the Blues. Lawrenceville School won the team title and The Hill School finished fourth. Peddie School’s Matilda Kardhashi placed first in 19:42.50.

BOYS SOCCER

Phoenixville 2, Lower Moreland 0

The No. 2 seed  Phantoms advanced to the District 1-3A semifinals with a quarterfinal win Wednesday night over the visiting No. 7 Lions. .Phoenixville (17-2-1) will host No. 3 Holy Ghost Prep, a 4-1 winner over Upper Perkiomen, next Tuesday with the winner qualifying for the PIAA Class 3A Tournament. 

Holy Ghost Prep 4, Upper Perkiomen 1

No. 6 Upper Perk had its season come to an end with a 4-1 loss to No.3 Holy Ghost Prep in a District 1-3A quarterfinal on Wednesday afternoon. The PAC runner-up Indians (12-8-1) were coming off their first appearance in the PAC playoffs since 2004.
