Mercury Roundup (Oct. 3): Wuertz’s game-winner lifts Spring-Ford over Boyertown, into first place

BOYS SOCCER

Spring-Ford 3, Boyertown 2

Left back Jonah Wuertz scored on an assist from Cole Preschutti with 6:05 left in regulation to supply the game-winner in the Rams’ win over the Bears Monday. After Jay Anderson scored the opener for Boyertown, Joey Ricevuto and Max Exeter (PK) replied and gave Spring-Ford the lead with 36:21 to play. Less than two minutes later, Macade Knoblauch tied the game again for the Bears. 

Perkiomen Valley 4, Norristown 0

Lawson Finger had three goals as Perkiomen Valley was able to hold off Norristown 4-0 in PAC action Monday. Finger started the scoring in the first two minutes of the match. Luke Hansen also scored with Lucas Nguyen, Christian Campbell, Sean Schoeniger, Owen Baker contributed assists. Norristown applied pressure late but Justin Angelo made multiple great saves to preserve the clean sheet.

Upper Perkiomen 6, Pottsgrove 0 

Upper Perk goals came from Nick Durrant (assist), Logan Watkins (2), Christian McGillen, Matthew Fisher (assist) and Aiden Heiser in a PAC win Monday, Vin Durrant chipped in a pair of assists.

Phoenixville 8, Upper Merion 0

 

GIRLS SOCCER

Upper Perkiomen 3, Pottsgrove 0

Sara Edwards scored twice and added an assist and the Indians finally broke down a stubborn Pottsgrove defense in the second half in a PAC Frontier match Monday. After a scoreless first half, Edwards tallied her first, running onto a through ball from Sarah Fisher and poking it past charging goalkeeper Ella Smith, who was excellent in a 14-save performance that included a penalty kick save.  Morgan Sweed struck for the second, arriving at the same time as a Pottsgrove defender to poke home a cross from Edwards. The two reversed roles for the third goal, as Sweed sent a low cross into the box which Edwards tapped home. Upper Perk GK Ava Long was only required to make one save in recording her sixth shutout of the season.

Perkiomen Valley 13, Norristown 0

Giavanna Marciano had a hat trick and an assist as the Vikings routed the Eagles in PAC play Monday. Lily Tremba had two goals and Emma Stankunas, Kieran Cabot, Lea Hall, Hailey Sharkey and Bri Tripodi contributed on multiple goals for PV.

FIELD HOCKEY

Marissa Cagliola was assisted by Nina Scott early in the third quarter for the game’s lone goal as Spring-Ford edged Owen J. Roberts in a PAC Liberty contest Monday.

Katie McCreary recorded six saves in the shutout. OJR’s Katie Larson stopped eight shots. An even game statistically, SF led 9-6 in shots while OJR led in corners 8-7.

Boyertown 4, Perkiomen Valley 0

Boyertown goals were scored by Katelyn Dulin (2), Hannah Ulrich and Mya Sanchez in a PAC Liberty win over Perk Valley. Peyton Shellaway had 2 assists and Emily Wilson also had an assist.  

Methacton 6, Norristown 0 

Six different scorers allowed first-place Methacton to cruise past Norristown in a PAC Liberty game Monday .Calie Fisher (assist), Avery Schwartz, Ceci Rehak, Renee Blake, Maddy Baker and Lizzie Mun supplied the Warriors’ goals while Elena Weychert had an assist.

Upper Perkiomen 4, Upper Merion 2

Sarah Steinman scored twice and Julia Traynor and Jade Traynor also tallied as Upper Perk topped Upper Merion in a PAC Frontier match Monday.

Abby Rodenberger and Regan Fiorito registered an assist each for UP. 

Phoenixville 3, Pope John Paul II 2

The Phantoms edged the Golden Panthers in PAC Frontier action Monday. Cate Mink and Katie Nilles scored for PJP in the loss. Phoenixville details were unavailable.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Pottsgrove 3, Upper Perkiomen 1 (25-18, 25-21, 20-25, 25-15)

In Pottsgrove’s four-set win Monday, Chelsea Wasdick had 9 digs, Raelyn Eisenhard had 14 assists and 14 service points, Marissa Leamy had 8 kills, and Avery Gleason had 7 kills. 

Pope John Paul II 3, Owen J. Roberts 0 (25-6, 25-22, 25-16)

The Golden Panthers improved to 12-0 with a straight set win over the Wildcats. Hutton Cordrey had eight kills and 12 kills, Gabriella Cooper had 14 digs, Elizabeth Beehler had six kills and Madison Monahan had 24 assists to lead PJP.

Upper Merion 3, Phoenixville 1

Sophia Schweikert’s 22 kills and 17 service points (6 aces) led Upper Merion to a 3-1 defeat of Phoenixville Monday. For UM (12-1), Caitlyn Daywalt had 30 assists while Yalerie Acevado had 12 kills. Julia Giammarco led the team with 7 aces while Amber Chang contributed 13 service points (4 aces). Sydney Bright and Despina Kourtidis combined for 7 kills and 4 blocks.
