Mercury roundup (Sept. 23) Methacton field hockey wins battle of PAC unbeatens over Boyertown


Methacton 5, Boyertown 2
Freshman Ceci Rehak’s hat trick and a three-goal first half helped Methacton to a victory in a matchup of PAC unbeaten teams on Friday.

Lily DeWan had a goal and an assist, Renee Blake also scored while Elise DeWan had an assist and a defensive save for the Warriors (6-0, 8-0, 11-1), who led 3-1 at half.

Hannah Ulrich and Peyton Shellaway scored for Boyertown (4-1, 6-1, 8-3). Goalie Sarah Yoder turned away 12 shots.

Upper Perkiomen 7, Pottstown 0
Jade Traynor and Ava Sensany scored two goals each and the PAC Frontier-leading Tribe topped the Trojans Friday. Jess Traynor, Kylie Marshall and Marianna Uber also score for UP. Taetum Robbins made 15 saves in goal for Pottstown.

Owen J. Roberts 8, Norristown 0
Evie Wolters scored twice and seven different Wildcats tallied in OJR’s PAC Liberty win over Norristown Friday. Also scoring for OJR was Mira Smolij, Maddie Tillou, Carson Gallagher, Alyssa Taylor, Maddy Holland, Hayden Streeter. Mackenzie Flick and Paige Lobb chipped in assists. Azzure Smith made seven saves for Norristown.

Pope John Paul II 3, Upper Merion 2
A great day for the Mink family fueled the Golden Panthers to a PAC Frontier win Friday. Sarah Mink scored twice and set up Cate Mink’s goal for PJP. Grace Mondillo and Abby Wilmot assisted Sarah Mink’s scores. UM’s Ella Menke scored both her team’s goals. Mere Cyr, Katie Lyons and Abby Simmers had defensive saves to preserve PJP’s win.


Spring-Ford 4, Norristown 0
Max Exeter scored a pair of goals and the Rams ran their win streak to six games in a PAC Liberty takedown of the Eagles. David Alban had a pair of assists and a late goal. Cole Preschutti also found the net for the Rams. PJ Pozniak made four saves for SF. The Rams have not allowed a goal in five matches.

Pope John Paul II 2, Pottsgrove 1
Second-half goals by Ben Rubinich and Ian Goetz allowed the Golden Panthers to topple the Falcons in a PAC Frontier match Friday. PJP controlled play and out-shot Pottsgrove 13-1 but could only manage a one-goal win with Falcons goalie AJ Lattanze making 10 saves. Gavin Knox scored for Grove.

Phoenixville 3, Upper Perkiomen 2
Efe Ulcay scored two goals and Jack Illig also found the net as the Phantoms edged the Indians in a matchup of the PAC Frontier’s top two teams. Connor Northcott, Nate Stewart, Evan DesMarais contributed assists for the winners (6-0, 8-0, 10-1). Upper Perk goals came from Christian McGillen and Matthew Fisher and Logan Watkins had a helper.

Methacton 4, Perkiomen Valley 0
Braden Kavanagh had a role in three scores – two goals and an assist – and the Warriors vaulted the Vikings in PAC Liberty action Friday. Brayden Ahlum had a goal and an assist and Tony Paone rounded out the Methacton scoring. Lucas Capelini aided Ahlum’s goal.


Upper Perkiomen 5, Phoenixville 0
The Indians used a balanced attack with 4 different players finding the back of the net on their way to a 5-0 victory over Phoenixville. Mary Kate Sitko, Sarah Straup and Morgan Sweed all recorded a goal and an assist, with Sara Edwards adding the other two goals. Ava Long recorded her 4th shutout of the season as Upper Perk outshot the Phantoms 14-3 while improving their record to 12-0-0.

Owen J. Roberts 2, Boyertown 1
Ashley Gordon and Olivia Thompson scored a goal apiece to lift Owen J. Roberts over Boyertown, 2-1. Emerson Storti assisted Gordon in the 16th minute while Alexa Vogelman assisted Thompson in the 58th minute. Alina Friz put the Bears on the board with a penalty kick goal in the 72nd minute. Colby Wasson made 11 saves for the Wildcats and Ciera Cameron came up with 11 saves for Boyertown as well.

Perkiomen Valley 1, Methacton 1
Methacton’s Aubrey Beaugard leveled the match on a long-range shot with 15:36 left in regulation, which is how the match ended in a draw between the PAC Liberty rivals Friday. Mairi Smith’s 12 saves in goal for Methacton were a key factor in the result.
Ashley Pickles, set up by Giavanna Marciano and Lily Tremba, staked PV to a lead 20 minutes into the game. PV goalie Olivia Hulayew needed only one save.

Pope John Paul II 1, Pottsgrove 1
The Falcons and Golden Panthers shared the points in a PAC Frontier draw Friday. Sophomore Mallory Hurlock scored for PJP on a free kick while Kyanni Escudero made 12 saves.

Hill School 208, Holy Ghost Prep 232
Captain Johnny Ju carded his best score of the season (42) and Terry Shao and Andy Gan tied for low-man of the day (40) to lead Hill to a win. Harrison Hu and Evan Sun followed with 43s.


Methacton 3, Perkiomen Valley 2 (22-25, 25-15, 25-14, 21-25, 15-12)
The Warriors edged the Vikings in a five-set PAC barnburner Friday. Methacton (5-3 PAC, 9-3) was led tonight by Kayla Ginther with 22 kills and Mandy Baldwin with 13 kills. Rachel Pettine dished out 44 assists in the win. Strong defense helped create offensive opportunities with Mianna Ly having 15 digs, Baldwin with 16 and Ginther with 10. For PV, Emily Chung had 12 assists and 14 digs, Naomi Clauhs had 17 kills and 10 digs, Olivia Wusinich tallied 14 assists and 12 digs and Alexis Boozer had 14 digs.
