OTD: Week 2 of the 2012 Coatesville season

*This is an ongoing series, looking back at each week of the 2012 Coatesville season, in which the Red Raiders became just the third team from Chester County to reach the PIAA Finals.

Off the heels of an opening-week blowout of William Penn, Coatesville hosted a Malvern Prep team fresh off a one-point loss to Roman Catholic.

The Red Raiders were up to the challenge, however. In a defensive struggle, Coatesville got on the board first when Dre Boggs broke a 75-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

It would prove to be Boggs’ breakout game, as the senior ran for 103 yards on 10 carries and also caught five balls for 97 yards and another touchdown.

The 7-0 Coatesville lead lasted into the third quarter, but the run game was very much a one-hit wonder against Malvern. In Coatesville’s other 23 carries, it collected just 27 yards.

Daquan Worley had just one yard on six carries, though he did add his second interception in as many weeks, on defense.

In the third quarter, Malvern got on the board when Billy Ford snuck a run in from two yards out, but the extra point failed and Coatesville led, 7-6. The Red Raiders pushed the lead to eight when Emmett Hunt connected with Boggs for a 33-yard score.

The Friars came right back and made it 14-12 on a 22-yard run by Troy Gallen.

The two teams found success in opposite ways, with Hunt passing for 264 yards and Malvern running for 264 yards.

But with a little over four minutes to play, Malvern’s Eric Purnell found the edge off the right side and reached pay dirt from five yards out to give the Friars a 19-14 lead.

On Coatesville’s final drive, Hunt hit Boggs for a 34-yard gain on 2nd-and-23 and then connected with Chris Jones for 36 yards on a fourth-and-nine.

In just his second start, Hunt’s clutch play was already on display, and the Red Raiders reached the Malvern three on Jones’ long haul. But Malvern forced two incompletions and on the final play of the game, Boggs was stopped one yard short with no time on the clock.

Coatesville committed eleven penalties for 91 yards and lost two fumbles and fell to 1-1, with a trip to Central Dauphin East coming up in week three.
