Reporter/Times Herald/Montgomery Media Roundup (Aug. 29): Gwynedd Mercy girls soccer scores twice in 2nd half to beat Pope John Paul II

GIRLS SOCCER

Gwynedd Mercy 3, Pope John Paul II >> Gwynedd Mercy’s Kat Pluck broke a 1-1 tie in the second half with a goal in th 49th minute while Hannah Griffin doubled the Monarchs’ lead in the 57th minute off a Riley Morris corner as GMA earned a nonleague victory.

Keira Cassidy put Gwynedd Mercy up 1-0 in the 29th minute. Pope John Paul II knotted things four minutes later when Lindsey Rezza scored on a free kick.

Kyanni Escudero made eight saves for PJP II. Lynley Koschineg had three saves for GMA.

Central Bucks South 2, Souderton 0 >> Goalkeeper Abby Allen’s play in the first half kept Souderton in the SOL Colonial matchup while Julia DeCaro and Sienna Stunkard created chances after the break but the Indians (1-1-0, 0-1-0 division) ended up being handed a shutout loss by Central Bucks South (2-0-0, 1-0-0).

Cheltenham 3, New Hope-Solebury 3 >> Cheltenham junior Maya Schwartz scored twice before halftime while sophomore Layla Baxter’s second-half tally pulled the Panthers even 3-3 as the SOL Freedom Division contest ended in a draw.

Schwartz gave Cheltenham (0-0-1, 0-0-1) a 1-0 lead off a junior Ciara Rodriguez assist. New Hope-Solebury (0-1-1, 0-0-1) scored the next two but Schwartz struck for her second with senior Maddie Messa getting the assist. An own goal gave NHS a 3-2 lead before Baxter tied things again.

BOYS SOCCER

Pennridge 2, North Penn 1 >> Shane Velez finished with a goal and an assist as Pennridge opened its year beating the team that ended its 2021 season.

Jared Hess also scored while Jack Bruno had an assist for the Rams (1-0-0, 1-0-0 SOL Colonial), who fell to North Penn in last year’s District 1-4A fifth place game. The Knights dropped to 1-1-0 (0-1-0 division).

Hatboro-Horsham 4, Wissahickon 1 >> Jake Freedman and Mikey Romano both scored twice as Hatboro-Horsham opened its season by shutting out visiting Wissahickon for an SOL Liberty Division victory.

Enrico Romano collected an assist for the Hatters (1-0-0, 1-0-0). Jeevan Jouhal scored for the Trojans (1-1-0, 0-1-0).

FIELD HOCKEY

Methacton 3, Downingtown East 1 >> Carmela Maro, Ceci Rehak and Renee Blake each had a goal in Methacton’s nonleague win.

Elena Weychert and Lily DeWan collected assists for the Warriors, who led 2-0 at halftime. Methacton got five saves from Emily Drake and four saves from Natalie Drake.

Kirstyn Kolinsky scored for Downingtown East with Faith Fuqua assisting. Cougars goalie Anna Power had nine saves.

Upper Dublin 4, Upper Merion 3 >> Rylie McGrath scored twice for Upper Merion but the Vikings were edged by Upper Dublin in the nonleague matchup.

Ashley Evitts also had a goal for UM while Ella Menke and Becca Shuler each had an assist.

Archbishop Carroll 6, Coatesville 2 >> Tied 1-1 after a quarter, Archbishop Carroll scored three times in the second quarter to  a 4-2 halftime lead. Sienna Golden and Gwyn Schnyder each found the back of the cage after the break as the Patriots pulled away for a nonleague victory.

Golden, Schnyder and Laura Weinburg all scored two goals for Carroll. Golden finished with two assists while Weinburg added an assist. Carroll goalie Arianna Hall had two saves.

Avery O’Hara and Sydney Saxton each had a goal for Coatesville while goalie Lorelai Lehnsky made nine saves.

GOLF

La Salle 226, Episcopal Academy 260 >> La Salle’s Ethan Martin and Tyler Leyden both shot 36s to pace all golfers as the Explorers earned a nonleague win at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club.

Scotty Hughes added a 37 for La Salle. Hunteron Stetson’s 39 led Episcopal Academy.

GIRLS TENNIS

Pope John Paul II 7, Archbishop Carroll 0 >> Mia Zernick rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win at first singles as Pope John Paul II swept Archbishop Carroll in the non-league match.
