Delco Football Roundup: Garnet Valley rallies late

Garnet Valley dug deep to give Eric Van Wyk his first win as head coach.

Trailing with 6:18 to play, the Jaguars drove 61 yards to win it on a one-yard run by Jason Bernard with 16 seconds left, handing a 14-7 defeat to Central Bucks West.

Quarterback Matt Mesaros kept the drive alive when he hit tight end Drew Van Horn for a 26-yard gain on fourth-and-3 from the C.B. West 29-yard line.

Bernard pushed the ball inside the 1-yard line on first down and tumbled into the end zone for the go-ahead score on a counter with 16 seconds left. Joseph Checchio added the two-point conversion to make it 14-7.

The Bucks drove to the Garnet Valley 15-yard line when linebacker Jake McDowell picked off a pass near the goal line to seal the victory.

Marple Newtown 42, Boys Latin 6 >> Brian Box scored three touchdowns, and quarterback Dave Bertoline threw for a score and ran for another.

The sophomore Box scored on a three-yard run to get the scoring started. He returned a kickoff 81 yards to make it 14-6 and then raced 35 yards for a TD in the third quarter.

Bertoline threw a 78-yard scoring pass to Alex Gillian and ran nine yards for a TD. Lou DiLuzio had a one-yard TD run.

In other action, Academy Park used a late pick-six to top Unionville, 13-7. Ridley fell to Crestview (Fla.), 50-28. Perkiomen Valley defeated Penn Wood, 66-6.
