Mercury Roundup (May 31): OJR girls lacrosse gets free pass to PIAA quarters; PV baseball ends season in playback

Girls Lacrosse

The Owen J. Roberts girls lacrosse team received passage to the second round of the PIAA Class 3A Championships by forfeit on Tuesday.

First-round opponent Central High School, from District 12, forfeited to the District 1 fifth-place team after the Philadelphia School District closed due to extreme heat.

OJR was informed Tuesday afternoon that Central would not travel to the game and forfeit.

The Wildcats were heavily favored in the contest – the same teams met in the first round in 2021 and OJR won 20-0 in a non-competitive game.

The Wildcats will face District 1 third-place Garnet Valley in Saturday’s quarterfinals after the Jaguars’ 24-6 win over District 3 runner-up Gov. Mifflin.

OJR defeated Garnet Valley 7-3 in the final game of the regular season before the Jaguars got revenge on the Wildcats with a 6-5 win in the district quarters.

Hatboro-Horsham 8, Perkiomen Valley 3

Highlights: The ninth-seeded Perkiomen Valley baseball couldn’t climb out of an early hole as it fell to second-seeded Hatboro Horsham in Tuesday’s District 1-6A playback game.

The loss ends the Vikings’ (16-7) season, while Hatboro (18-4) advances to face Souderton on Thursday for the district’s final spot in the state  tournament.

The Hatters jumped out to a 6-0 lead after four innings after Logan Fisher’s two-run homer. Noah Schlosser also homered in the game for Hatboro, while Jack Elwell and Ryan Toporowski both tallied two hits apiece.

Hatboro starter Trey Porter kept the Vikings’ bats quiet until the top of the fifth when Luke Ott led off with a double and scored on an error to make it a 6-1 ball game.

Hatboro added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to go up 8-1.

A lead-off walk to Chris Gorla followed by a two-run homer by Michael Poruban gave PV some life, but the Vikings were retired in order after that.

Jack Colyer (6 ER) and Andrew McGowan (2 ER) both tossed three innings for PV.
