FRANCONIA >> The Souderton girls lacrosse team has persevered through injury, illness, and most recently, a driving rain storm, to keep the ship on course.
Big Red battled through a wet and windy Friday evening to earn a 12-6 win over rival Abington in a Suburban One League non-division game on the turf at Souderton.
“If you can overcome a freezing cold, rainy day in May, and play through it and play with a smile, I think that’s the most important thing,” said Big Red coach Claudia LaMarca. “We teach our girls that you can’t always control the weather, you can’t control some different things around you, but if you can play hard and play together, and play with a smile, nine times out of 10, it will go your way.”
Big Red came away with a crucial victory that upped their record to 8-6. Big Red is 5-2 in the SOL National.

“It’s tough to play through the elements but today’s game was good,” said LaMarca. “Abington’s a really tough team and they’re always here to fight.”
Powered by Lauren Hallman’s six goals, Big Red built a commanding lead by the half and led 10-2 with about 15 minutes to play.
Souderton’s passing and ball movement proved to be weather-proof. Jess Burns saw to that.
“I think it was really tough for us to win a draw. Abington did an awesome job getting possession. When we had the ball, we definitely pushed the fast break and Jess Burns has been a really tremendous assist maker for us and she did an awesome job finding cuts in the middle,” LaMarca said.

Reiley Knize scored a hat trick, and Yasmin Khatri, Angela Borisow and Burns each added a goal for the Indians.
“Our key is possession and when we get possession, we can score, but Abington did a fantastic job of keeping the ball away from us today,” LaMarca said.
The Ghosts (5-10, 3-6 SOL American) got a pair of goals each from Haley Hamsher and Mei Cheng.

Souderton, looking to continue its push towards the District 1-3A Playoffs, hosts Council Rock South Monday night at 7 p.m., and Abington hosts Lower Moreland at 5 p.m. that evening.
