2021-22 Pa. Sports Writers’ All-State Girls Basketball Teams

Players from southeastern Pa. were the dominant force in the 2021-22 Pennsylvania Sports Writers’ All-State Girls Basketball Teams, released Thursday.

Five of the six Players of the Year hail from this corner of the state: Pennsbury senior Ava Sciolla (6A), Cardinal O’Hara senior Maggie Doogan (5A), Archbishop Wood senior Ryanne Allen (4A), Neumann-Goretti senior Mihjae Hayes (3A) and Westtown senior Kaylene Smikle (2A).

Sciolla, a 5-11 senior, scored 16.3 points per game for Pennsbury, which finished third in District 1 and reached the PIAA quarterfinals. Sciolla was a three-time All-State selection and repeat first teamer.

Doogan, a 6-2 senior who averaged 16.0 ppg, led Cardinal O’Hara to the Philadelphia Catholic League title and the PIAA 5A championship, the Lions’ second straight state crown. Doogan is a repeat first team selection and the two-time Daily Times Player of the Year.

Allen led the Vikings to back-to-back state titles. The Vanderbilt-bound guard averaged 17 ppg, 3.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game this season and was named the Philadelphia Catholic League MVP, Wood’s first since 2014.

Hayes, a 5-3 guard, averaged 24.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, 5.2 steals, and 4 assists for PIAA 3A champion Neumann-Goretti.

Westtown’s Smikle, a 6-1 senior and Rutgers recruit, was named Pa. Gatorade Player of the Year after 23-4 season that culminated with the PAISAA championship Smikle averaged 23.0 points and 6.3 rebounds.

Dan Dougherty, head coach of undefeated state champion Plymouth Whitemarsh, was named coach of the year in 6A.
