Delco Roundup: Wilson, O’Neill spark Carroll to comeback conquest of Wood

Brooke Wilson and Grace O’Neill combined for 15 points in the fourth quarter to help Archbishop Carroll rally for a 44-38 Catholic League girls basketball victory over Archbishop Wood Thursday.

Wilson scored 10 of her 15 points and O’Neill added five of her 18 points as the Patriots outscored the Vikings, 17-3, to erase a 35-27 deficit. Wilson also had eight rebounds while O’Neill handed out four assists.

Chloe Bleckley did not score but paced the defensive effort with four steals. Courtland Schumacher added a solid floor game off the bench.

In the Del Val League:

Academy Park 55, Chichester 22: Semaji Young led the defensive charge that powered the Knights to their second straight win.

Young had nine steals to go with 13 points and four assists as the Knights held the Eagles to 12 points over the final three quarters. Avianna Williams pitched in with nine points.

Boys Basketball

Delco Christian turned up the defensive pressure in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 66-54 victory over Valley Forge Military Academy Thursday.

The Knights outscored the Cadets, 15-5, in the final period to secure the win. Josh Parks led DC with a game-high 24 points. Lincoln Palmer added 14 points and Josh Dell’Arciprete chipped in with 10.

Dujwana Jones led Chi with nine points.


Fernando Loor (132), William Hohn (160), Carles Maier (172), Paul Buckley (189), William Vandiver (215) and Vern Holley (285) all recorded first-period pins as Episcopal Academy rolled over Church Farm School Wednesday, 66-12.

Loor needed just 17 seconds to record his victory. Maier pinned Joshua Han in 54 seconds. Donal Rieck (138), Zane Miller (145) and Flynn Kearney (152) also won by fall for the Churchmen.

Springfield-Montco 37, Springfield-Delco 30 >> Roderick Porter’s pin at 132 pounds sealed the win for the host Spartans.

Thomas Clifford (126), Matthew Klein (160), Ethan Johnson and Tristen Cuellar (285) all won by fall for the Cougars. Stephen Scott (138) and Tommy Rush (145) won by decision.

Boys Squash

Nayan Shankaran pulled out a tough, four-game victory at first singles as Episcopal Academy blanked Malvern Prep, 9-0, in the Inter-Ac League.

Shankaran downed Malvern’s Peter Russell 11-9, 6-11, 11-8, 11-6. Sean Magee and Nik Athwal won 3-0 at second and third singles, respectively.

Girls Squash

Co-captain Maya Gambhir pulled out a five-game victory to give Episcopal Academy a 5-4 nonleague victory over Lawrenceville in a match where both teams were shorthanded.

The Churchwomen were without four of their top nine players while the Big Red were without three of their top seven players.

Girls Swimming

Sun Valley 104, Oxford 73 >> Kara Damico captured the 50 and 100 free to pace the Vanguards over the Hornets Wednesday. Elaina Blackstock finished first in the diving and Cassidy Dormer, Sami Reeves, Megan Sarosy and Antonia Lillis teamed up to win the 400 freestyle.

Boys Swimming

Sun Valley 100, Oxford 73 >> Ryan McKenna (500 free), Timmy Gauzza (100 backstroke) and Connor Day (diving) were individual winners for the Vanguards. Alex Mozzoni, Alex Taylor, Nate Sweigart and Max Bartolf took first in the 400 free relay.
