Mercury Wrestling Roundup (Jan. 15): Boone has 4 winners at Berks championships

BCIAA Championships

Highlights: Four champions and a runner-up were key to Daniel Boone placing third in the Berks individual tournament at Reading High.

Dean Houser (106), Gavin Richard (120), J.T. Hogan (152) and Tucker Hogan (172) won their respective weights, Houser and Tucker Hogan by pin and Richard on a technical fall. Brett Marchiano was second at 138 for Boone, which placed in the team standings behind champion Berks Catholic and runner-up Wilson-West Lawn.

The Blazers’ other medalists were Khyre Inman (third at 160), Nolan Stephen Brown (fourth at 132) and Ryan Poore (fifth at 145).

Escape the Rock

Highlights: Hill School’s Kelvin Griffin was the area’s lone competitor to remain in gold-medal contention through the first day of action in the prestigious tournament hosted by Council Rock South.

Griffin reached the quarterfinal round at 138 by blanking another local grappler, Perkiomen Valley’s Kelly Kakos, 7-0 in the round of 16. He previously scored a 47-second pin on West Chester Henderson’s Matt English in the Round of 16.

Still alive in wrestlebacks are Boyertown’s Chance Babb (145), the Hill’s Hunter Sloan (126) and Perkiomen Valley’s Luke Ricci (145).

Buckley Duals

West Chester East 54, Phoenixville 24

HIGHLIGHTS: Kael Gilbert was the star for the Phantoms in the duals competition hosted by Haverford School. He pinned two of three opponents in his sweep of the 172-pound field.

Phoenixville’s best shot at a win came against host Haverford, taking a 31-28 lead into the 285-pound finale. But the Fords got a first-period pin to cap the comeback victory.
