High Schools: Benjamin, Marple Newtown take down Radnor in volleyball

Azira Benjamin’s all-around steady performance of 13 kills, three aces and two kills helped Marple Newtown to a 3-1 victory over Radnor in Central League volleyball action Monday.

Jenna Coary (four kills, one ace), Emily Bower (seven blocks, three kills) and Sam Avellino (four aces, two kills) all played well for the Tigers, who prevailed by game scores of 26-24, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21.

In other Central League matches:

Strath Haven 3, Harriton 2 >> The Panthers edged the Rams in a five grueling sets. Leading the way was setter Gabby Zweier with 12 digs, 18 assists and one kill.

Middle hitter Emily McGinn posted 12 kills, nine blocks and one dig, while setter Damola Songonuga added 16 assists, eight digs and four aces. Liberio Molly Prendergast (30 digs, seven aces, two assists) and defensive specialists Gigi Fiordimondo (12 digs, five aces) and Jaiden Whitfield (17 digs) also put forward strong efforts.

Garnet Valley 3, Upper Darby 0 >> Marypearl Tienabeso paired nine kills with five blocks as the first-place Jaguars (13-2, 9-0) blanked the Royals by scores of 25-8, 25-4, 25-11.

Maddie Wood supplied 28 assists and five aces and Kelly St. Germain recorded nine kills. Abby Houpt and Klaira Zakarian combined for eight kills for the Jags, who received solid defense by Rachel Sokalsky and Steph May.

Conestoga 3, Penncrest 2 >> Kay Wimberly filled up the stat sheet with four aces, seven kills, seven digs and 27 assists for the Lions, who fell by scores of 17-25, 23-25, 25-19, 19-25.

Liz Kurcon notched three aces, 22 kills and 11 digs. Chloe Breeze had 21 digs and Emma Curran finished with 11 kills and five digs.

Lower Merion 3, Ridley 0 >> The Green Raiders lost 25-10, 25-10, 25-18. Karlie Cecchini and Emily Liberio had 10 digs each and Mia Campanile chipped in with six kills.

Haverford 3, Springfield 2 >> The Fords stormed back from a 2-0 deficit to win in five sets 19-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-20, 19-17.

Katie Letcher paced the Cougars in defeat with 38 assists, 10 digs, five aces and two blocks. Bianca Brown totaled five kills, eight blocks, two digs and one ace. Baleigh Rhodes (10 kills, five digs), Caroline Kirsch (eight, one block, one ace) and Lauren Eck (seven digs) also put forward solid efforts for Springfield.

Stats for Haverford’s players were not reported to the Daily Times.

In the Catholic Academies League:

Sacred Heart 3, Villa Maria 1 >> Emily McKenna’s 13 kills and 15 digs highlighted a 17-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-21 victory for the Lions, who improved to 12-4 overall. Annie Corcoran dished out 27 assists and Bella O’Toole flourished on defense with 17 digs.

In a nonleague match:

Pope Paul VI 3, Cardinal O’Hara 2 >> Maggie Doogan tallied 12 kills, seven blocks and one dig, but the Lions (13-5) fell in five sets to their opponent from New Jersey.

Bridget McGuinn had 14 kills, 11 digs and one block, while Jasmine Sullivan ended with 11 kills, 11 digs, two blocks, two aces and one assist. Juliann Cloran and Kelly Garvey combined for 38 assists.

Girls Soccer

Lily Marquis twice found the back of the net for Cardinal O’Hara in an 8-0 nonleague win over Penn Wood.

Violette Meehan, Nat Cappcio, Kaitlin Cunningham, Ana Ciminera, Alyssa Michael and Tara Sheehan all scored a goal for the Lions. Sanaa Ballenger had the shutout in net.

Boys Soccer

Max Cardone and Matthew Levis registered hat trick in Delco Christian School’s 10-1 rout of Collegium Charter.

Griffin Schmitt added a tally and an assist for the Knights. Cam Vavalva, Jake Johnson and Blake Tanis all bagged a goal.
