Roundup: Jones comes up big to keep Sun Valley volleyball undefeated

Jenna Jones came up with 10 kills and 15 assists to pace Sun Valley to a 3-0 nonleague victory over Springfield in nonleague volleyball action Friday.

Katie Kuehl (11 kills) and Gianna Ellis (seven kills) also were strong at the net in the 25-16, 25-20, 25-19 triumph. Kylie Shetter recorded 15 digs and Katie McGroarty added eight assists.

Katie Bachetti (nine kills, five digs, three aces), Baleigh Rhodes (five kills, four digs, one block) and Katie Letcher (18 assists, 12 digs, one ace) led the way for the Cougars.

In other nonleague action:

Downingtown West 3, Garnet Valley 1 >> Maddie Wood dished out 33 assists as the Jaguars suffered their first loss of the season 25-23, 19-25, 25-19, 25-11. Sara Weins (nine kills, one block), Kate Dugery (six kills, three blocks) and Klaira Zakarian (eight kills) were strong at the net for GV (4-1).

Field Hockey

Notre Dame overcame a sluggish start to rally for a 3-1 nonleague victory over Archbishop Carroll.

The Patriots had a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal by Courtland Schumacher on a penalty stroke. Maeve Seeger tied the game, Saylor Milone put the Irish ahead to stay and Emma Steel provided an insurance goal.

Reilly McMeniman stopped 12 shots for the Patriots. Caroline Doyle five for the Irish.

Boys Soccer

Jake Johnson and Cortez Cardone tallied twice each in the second half to pace Delco Christian to a 6-0 Bicentennial League victory over MaST Charter.

Johnson also two assists on DC’s first two goals. He fed Judah Cooper for the winter in the 36th minute and set up Blake Tanis in the 41st minute. The defense did not allow a shot to reach keeper Micah Dill.

In nonleague action:

Strath Haven 7, Interboro 0 >> Ethan Birch had a huge day with three goals and one assist to lead the Panthers.

Traeger Hogarth, Tim Styer, Jamie Lenart and Zach Rothman also found the back of the net while George Pezzeca, Nico Taylor, Jake Hooper, Beckett Young and Simon Muther provided assists.

Episcopal Academy 1, Hill School 0 >> Akira Heath made Alex Barrist’s first-half goal stand up as the winner. Heath made five saves to post the shutout. Barrist converted a pass from Eddie Jones for the only goal of the game.

Girls Soccer

Erin Cunningham scored twice, both off assists from Quinn Whitaker, to pace Episcopal Academy to a 6-0 nonleague triumph over Hill School. Bella Piselli, Alexa Capozzoli, Kendal Elison and Maya Bright also scored for EA. Goalie Maya Naimoli stopped two shots to post a clean sheet.

Garnet Valley 7, Interboro 0 >> Maddie Smith and Ella Bryan all scored the first varsity goals of their careers. Smith, Alyssa Wert and Anna Goldkamp led the attack with two goals each. Lexi Marren and Jenny Green split the shutout.

Girls Tennis

Using a college-scoring format where players can play both singles and doubles, Episcopal Academy topped Hill School, 7-0, in nonleague action.

Ashley Kennedy and Kamora Helton were double winners for the Churchwomen. The pair teamed up for an 8-0 victory at first doubles. Kennedy won 6-0, 6-0 at first singles and Helton was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at second singles.  Gabriella Hurbide and Rominia Villareal, and Izzy Rozes and Maggie Lo completed a sweep of the doubles.

Ridley 4, Springfield 3 >> Julia Dinyon and Carolyn Barnes took a three-set victory at third doubles to lift Ridley to a 4-3 Central League win over Springfield on Thursday.

Dinyon and Barnes won 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (11-9) to clinch the match. Meadow Pinter and Jaela Nguyen scored a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory at second doubles. Megan Rowlyk and Lauren Grady (first doubles) and Meghan To (third singles) were the other winners for the Raiders.

Mia Graci (first singles), Sha’Axaria Gordon (second singles) and Keira Gillgan and Erin McBride (fourth doubles) were the winners for Springfield.
