District 1 Class 6A Baseball: Blanked early, Garnet Valley stays alive via Van Horn’s triple

Garnet Valley remains alive and well.

The Jaguars continued their quest for the fifth and final PIAA tournament berth in District 1 Class 6A Tuesday. Drew Van Horn’s RBI triple in the ninth inning lifted the 18th-seeded Jags to a 4-3 victory over No. 4 West Chester Henderson.

The Jags travel to No. 1 Spring-Ford in the fifth-place playback finale Thursday afternoon. The Rams rallied late from a four-run deficit to beat No. 19 Council Rock South, 11-9.

Henderson threatened in the bottom of the ninth, but GV reliever Ryan Wootten retired the final two hitters and left the tying run stranded at second base.

The Jaguars trailed 2-0 going into the seventh inning. Down to their final out, Matt Marowski delivered an RBI single and CJ Wood scored on an error to tie the game.

Van Horn also had a pair of doubles for the Jags. Marowski finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Colin Simmons chipped in with a two-base knock. Garnet starter Jake Potts threw 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

Henderson ace Edwin Smink fanned 16 in six innings of work. He allowed no runs on four hits. The Jags lit up Henderson reliever Jackson Snyder for four earned runs on six hits over three innings.
