Souderton offense in high gear in win over Central Bucks South

FRANCONIA >> The top six batters in Souderton’s lineup all had hits Thursday against Central Bucks South, as Big Red went swinging into the second half of their division schedule.

“Our bats are how we win games,” said the Indians’ Riley York. “When we get them going, we’re doing well.”

York, batting cleanup, reached base all four times she was at the plate, helping the Indians pound out a 7-2 victory over the Titans in a Suburban One League Colonial Division game.

Souderton upped its division mark to 4-2 on the year, with South dropping to 2-4.

“We had some solid hits, a very good day batting wise,” Big Red coach Carol Atkinson said. “We put some nice bunts down and did very well.”

The Indians struck quickly, with Megan Kummery drawing a walk and coming in to score on an error by South.

Souderton made it 2-0 in the third, when York singled and later scored on a wild pitch by Titan starter Madison Borowski.

Said York: “I was pretty confident up at the plate. We faced this pitcher before so we knew what she threw, but she was really hitting her corners well today. So I had to adjust after my first at-bat.”

York drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth, widening the gap to 3-0 on a cool, breezy day at Souderton. Ryan Zimmerman, who had three RBI for Big Red, drove in Gail Hartman (walk), boosting the lead to 4-0.

In the sixth, an RBI single by York helped break it open. Zimmerman followed by driving in two.

Along with the consistent flow of offense, Souderton’s defense was rock solid.

“The first time we played them (in a 13-7 win), we didn’t do too well defensively so we made some good adjustments,” York said. “We just focused on getting the ball in quicker, being smarter, being more heads-up.”

Big Red starter Abby Burns nearly had a shutout, allowing just two hits through the first six innings.

The Titans broke the shutout in the seventh, when Marlene Hacker smacked a single and Alexandria Franck belted a two-run homer to right center.

Burns had her rise and change-up working throughout.

“Abby has been in her zone pitching and she’s been doing wonderful keeping the opposing girls on their toes,” Atkinson said. “She’s definitely been solid on the mound. She throws a mix of everything.

“All division games are big wins, and CB South always comes to play.”

CB South travels to Quakertown Friday at 3:30 p.m. and Souderton travels to CB East Monday at 4 p.m.
