Lower Merion’s Will Treiman is Main Line Boys Athlete of the Week

A senior forward and second-year captain, Treiman has been a leading scorer for the Lower Merion ice hockey team for three years. He also plays for the Wissahickon Skating Club, which won the Delaware Valley Hockey League championship in 2019 and made Districts last year. Off the ice, the Wake Forest University-bound senior plays baseball for Lower Merion and is president of Best Buddies at Lower Merion. LM ice hockey head coach Dan Pike said, “Will earns the respect of his teammates by the examples he sets and by the effort he gives, and this is why he has donned the C on his uniform since his junior year. He is a dedicated student-athlete, is always working to elevate everyone around him, is approachable, respectful and very coachable.”

Q: You’ve always played forward – what originally attracted you to the position? What do you think are the most important attributes of a good forward?

A: What originally attracted me the most to it was being able to be the one that scores the goals. It is a great feeling whenever I can put the puck in the back of the net. I think the most important attribute of a good forward is having a high hockey IQ, and knowing where everyone is, and where they are supposed to be.

Q: How do you see your leadership role on the team as a two-year captain, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic? Can you give an example (on the ice or off the ice) of where you had to exert leadership as captain?

A: I think a major part of my leadership role on this team is keeping everyone engaged, as well as getting everyone fired up, especially during COVID. Before every game, the team gathers around the net, and I give them a little speech to make sure they’re all ready for the battle ahead.

Q: What do you think is the strongest aspect of your game? What part of your game are you working on the most currently?

A: I think the strongest part of my game is my hockey IQ, and doing the little things right. This means that I am able to see the game well, and predict what the other players are going to do with the puck. I am currently working on trying to get faster to be able to be even more effective.

Q: What is your favorite memory of the 2019 DVHL season, you’re your Wissahickon team won the title?

A: My favorite memory from that season was the championship game because everyone on the team did their part, which included our team scoring two short-handed goals. The team we played had beaten us by a fair amount in the regular season, but in the finals we all came together and took them down.

Q: Are there any hockey players who you really admire, and why?

A: Alex Ovechkin is a player I really admire because he can score from anywhere on the ice, but is also a threat in other aspects of his game, like physically.

Q: Who have been your biggest ice hockey mentors, and what was the important thing each of them taught you?

A: Coach Pike and John Williams (Wissahickon Skating Club coach) have both been great mentors to me. They taught me how to play with heart, as well as many useful skills that have made me better on the ice. More importantly, they have taught me how to be a great teammate, and leader, which are two things that will stick with me for the rest of my life, on and off the ice.

Q: What do you think you’d like to major in at Wake Forest? Is there a particular career field that interests you at the present time?

A: I think I will be majoring in marketing and/or communications. Right now, real estate seems very appealing to me, but that could change in a week.

Q: What are your goals for Best Buddies as president? What has been your favorite experience with Best Buddies?

A: I want Best Buddies to reach a larger group of students at Lower Merion. There are a few clubs that reach everyone in the school, and I want Best Buddies to be one of those clubs. My favorite experience with Best Buddies has been being able to form a strong friendship with my buddy, Luke, as well as many of the other students involved.
