Levy leads Marple Newtown to upset of Haverford

Marple Newtown’s girls basketball team is proving to be a formidable challenge early in the season. Two days after a lopsided victory over Garnet Valley, the upstart Tigers defeated another Central League power Saturday afternoon.

Junior forward Haley Levy netted a game-high 13 points in a 41-30 win over Haverford.

The Tigers outscored the Fords by 10 points in the second half and shot 15-for-21 from the free-throw line. Nikki Mostardi added nine points and Mackenzie Hilden finished with seven.

Chiara MacGillivray and Caroline Dotsey paced Haverford with nine points apiece.

Boys Basketball

Hunter Kraiza made 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to help Haverford down Marple Newtown, 60-52.

John Seidman tallied a game-high 22 points for the Fords, while Mike Tansey led the Tigers with 19 points.


Gabe Vandevere recorded a pin in a mere 40 seconds in the 120-pound bout to help Radnor to victory over Springfield, 48-30.

Other wins by fall for Radnor were had by Zack Fluck (126), Mason Brown (132), Nate Brown (138), Michael Shea (145) and Anton Skvortsov (189).

Anthony Volpe (106), Dan Gallagher (160) and Edric Baiden (285) won by fall for the Cougars.

Garnet Valley 48, Haverford 18 >> The Jaguars dominated thanks in part to an 16-1 technical fall from Griffin Hollingsworth at 132 pounds and a 14-0 major decision from Matthew Ricci at 120. Shane Layer (126), Daniel Husain (138), Christopher Wood (145), Desmon Perry (172) and Nicholas Maloney (285) added pins.
