Mercury Soccer Roundup (Sept. 29): Upper Perk girls hold off Pottsgrove

Upper Perkiomen 2, Pottsgrove 0 >> The Indians scored early and late in each half Tuesday to open their 2020 season with a shutout of the Falcons in PAC play.

Megan Cairns opened the scoring in the sixth minute by stripping a defender of the ball and dribbling into the box before launching a near post shot. Sarah Edwards added an insurance goal for UP in the last minute of the game, heading in a corner kick from sister Erin Edwards.

The Indian defense of Lauren Powers, Lindsay Bieler, Erin Edwards and Kate Cairns had a solid outing in front of goalkeeper Gabby Neal, who registered three saves in recording the shutout win. Ella Smith gave Pottsgrove 11-save goaltending.

Daniel Boone 5, Exeter 0 >> Five players, headed by Nicole Brown, scored goals to key the Blazers’ Berks League shutout of the Eagles.

Brown added two assists while Lily Ferguson and Maggie Holloway had goals and assists. Nylah Cody and Erin Griffin rounded out the Boone offense, and Jenna Heasley added four-save goaltending to help the Blazers (1-0, 3-0) maintain their unbeaten standing.

Boys soccer

Daniel Boone 2, Exeter 1 >> Justin Fetrow scored twice to help the Blazers (1-0, 3-0) edge the Eagles in Tuesday’s Berks League contest.

Matthew Skipper scored for Exeter, which played short for the final 25 minutes because of a red card.
