Academy of Notre Dame’s Georgie Gorelick is Main Line Girls Athlete of the Week

The senior attack had a stellar junior season for the PAISAA champion Academy of Notre Dame lacrosse team last spring, scoring 67 goals, collecting 42 ground balls, causing 10 turnover and winning 15 draw controls. She received first team All-Inter-Ac honors, as well as second team All-Main Line and All-Delco selection. She has scored 100 career goals and was a member of the National Tournament Team 1. She also plays field hockey for Notre Dame. Next fall, she will attend Johns Hopkins University, where she will play lacrosse. Academy of Notre Dame lacrosse head coach Austin Brown said of the Johns Hopkins University-bound senior, “As a new coach coming in this year, I was thoroughly impressed when I first met Georgie during winter workouts. She instantly stood out as a leader and motivator. She always gave 110 percent in everything she was asked to do and brought her teammates along with her, pushing them to become better. I am heartbroken for Georgie, and the other seniors, who will not be able to play their senior season. I am looking forward to seeing Georgie thrive over the next four years at Johns Hopkins.”

Q: What were your goals for this spring season?

A: My goals for the spring were the same as last year. I wanted to help my team win a second PAISAA championship!

Q: What aspects of your game did you work on most during the off-season?

A: During the off-season I worked a lot on my shooting and dodging. I wanted to work on becoming more versatile as a player. After last season, I really wanted to work on my defensive skills, so that was a main focus for me this off-season.

Q: What do you think were the keys to your scoring proficiency last spring?

A: I think repetition is what helped me most. I spent a lot of time on the field and in my backyard just shooting around. In addition, I had really awesome teammates who were always there to support me on and off the field!

Q: What are your thoughts about the cancellation of the spring sports season because of the coronavirus situation? How did you see your leadership role as a leading senior on the Notre Dame lacrosse team during the past few weeks?

A: It was really tough to hear this news. It was something that no one was expecting at the beginning of the season. Especially being a senior knowing that I will never put my Notre Dame uniform on again, this was really sad news. Our team continues to stay in touch and do zoom calls each week. It is important to stay positive during this time!

Q: Tell us a little about your start in lacrosse. What originally attracted you to lacrosse? Who have been your most important lacrosse mentors, and what was the most important thing each of them taught you?

A: My dad played lacrosse in college at Mount Saint Mary’s University so growing up I always had a stick in my hand. My dad, along with my coaches, have always been my biggest mentors! They have always taught me to give 100 percent no matter the situation.
