Carroll gives top-seeded Wood a scare in PCL quarterfinals

Eighth-seeded Archbishop Carroll gave top-seeded Archbishop Wood all it could handle in the Catholic League boys basketball quarterfinals Friday night.

In the end, though, the Vikings were just a little too much for the Patriots and Rashool Diggins had a lot to do with it.

Diggins scored 11 of his team-high 25 points in the fourth quarter as Wood rallied for a 72-68 victory in overtime.

The win sends the Vikings to next Wednesday’s semifinals at the Palestra against fifth-seeded Roman Catholic, which needed a buzzer-beater to knock off No. 4 Bonner-Prendergast, 61-59. Seventh-seeded Archbishop Ryan, which upset No. 2 Bishop McDevitt, 58-56, takes on third-seeded Neumann-Goretti, a 71-46 winner over No. 6 Cardinal O’Hara.

The Wood-Roman game is at 6:30 with the Ryan/Neumann-Goretti contest at 8:15.

Jaylen Stinson backed Diggins with 13 points.

Tairi Ketner, who earned third-team All-Catholic honors, paced the Patriots with a game-high 26 points. Amiri Stewart chipped in with 16 points.
