Malvern Prep wrestler Cole Deery is Main Line Boys Athlete of the Week

The Malvern Prep junior heavyweight captured the Escape The Rock tournament title Jan. 19, earning his 100th career win in the process, which includes 66 wins and an eighth-place state medal in two seasons at Garnet Valley, plus 34 wins in 35 matches at Malvern Prep this season (as of Jan. 27). Earlier this season, he finished first at both the Walsh Ironman and the Powerade tournaments..

Q: What do you think was your best match of the Escape The Rock tourney?

A: I believe my best match was my semifinal match – this was because I was very dominant and I feel as if I broke the kid. I was just relentless on my attacks and it worked out in the end.

Q: What do you think has been your best match of the season, and why?

A: After winning, Powerade, Ironman, and ETR and lastly taking third at beast of the east, I feel like my best match of season was my win in at Powerade. I was supposed to take second and I went in and won. I just went in there and proved everyone wrong. So I think my finals match at Powerade was my most exciting win. I lost to [Isaiah] Vance last year at States, so it was a great win.

Q: Tell us about your start in wrestling – what sparked your initial interest? Who have been your most important wrestling mentors, and what was the most important thing you learned from each of them?

A: I started wrestling when I was 4 years old. My neighbor wrestled and I gave it a shot and fell in love with it. The most important people that have helped me is my dad and my Malvern coaches, all my coaches through my youth programs and my past high school, Garnet Valley. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. I think they have given me the same message, “What are you doing that someone else isn’t?”

Q: What do you consider your biggest strength on the mat and what you are working on most currently?

A: I feel my biggest strength is being so dominant on my feet. I feel like getting to my shots is a big thing. I’m working on finishing my shots and getting in deep.

Q: Tell us a little about your pre-match preparation the day of a match.

A: I just get hydrated and make sure to have food in my system before my match. My pre match routine is to do my jump rope and bands and then I’ll do a five minute sweat match.

Q: What is your favorite subject at Malvern Prep? What do you think you might want to major in at college? Is there a particular career path that interests you?

A: My favorite subject at Malvern is history. I’m not sure what I want to major in college but something along the lines of architecture and business contracting. I think I want to pursue being a contractor or architect in my future.
