Main Line wrap-up: Malvern’s Turner scores 2,000th point; Harriton matmen shine

Malvern Prep’s Deuce Turner scored his 2,000th career point in the Friars’ 92-50 win against Friends’ Central Jan. 4. Turner finished with 31 points, while teammate Rahdir Hicks chipped in with 15 points and Joe McElwee added 10.
On the wrestling mat, Harriton seniors Luke Fink (145 pounds) and Roberto Lesser (152) both finished in first place at the Jim Thorpe Tournament Dec. 28, in which the Rams competed against 18 regional teams. Fink went 5-0 with three pins, while Lesser was 4-0 with three pins and one major decision.

Boys’ basketball
Archbishop Carroll defeated Lansdale Catholic, 62-43, Jan. 3. John Camden hit five 3-pointers and poured in a game-high 26 points. Dean Coleman-Newtown chipped in with 11 points, Caleb Carter nine and Anquan Hill eight.
Conestoga lost to Upper Darby, 51-33, Jan. 4. Jack Liedtka had nine points for the Pioneers.
Episcopal Academy lost to Perkiomen School, 67-37, Jan. 4. Alex Capitano scored 11 points for EA, and teammate Will Delaney chipped in with 10.
Friends’ Central lost to Unionville, 67-54, in the Pete & Jameer Nelson Play-By-Play Classic at Jefferson University Dec. 27. Leading the way for Friends’ was Ed Holland with 14 points and Shawn Simmons with 13 points.
Haverford High lost to Garnet Valley, 49-45, Jan. 4. John Seidman led the Fords (6-4, 2-3) with 22 points. Hunter Krazia chipped in 11 points.
Lower Merion (8-1) edged Ridley, 82-81, in double overtime Jan. 4, as sophomore Jaylen Shippen hit a game-winning free throw with 0.2 seconds left on the clock. LM overcame a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter, and got 27 points from sophomore Demetrius Lilley (23 in the second half) and 22 points from senior James Simples.
The Aces defeated Central York, 66-54, to win the Hempfield Holiday Tournament title Dec. 28. Phil Cook scored a career-high 15 points. James Simples was named the tourney’s MVP, while freshman Sam Brown also made the all-tournament team.
Lower Merion defeated host Hempfield, 61-45, in the first round of the Hempfield Holiday Tournament Dec. 27, and got 18 points from James Simples.
Radnor lost to Strath Haven, 45-42, Jan. 4. Jack D’Entremont led the Raiders, who suffered their first Central League loss, with 22 points.

Girls’ basketball
Academy of Notre Dame defeated Sidwell Friends, 57-54, Jan. 4. The Irish got 22 points (including a trio of treys) from Maeve McErlane and 16 points from Allie Lynch.
One day earlier, the Irish fell to Germantown Academy, 61-43. Izzy Casale led Notre Dame with 17 points, and Maeve McErlane chipped in with 13 points.
Archbishop Carroll lost to Archbishop Wood, 53-40, Jan. 3. Erin Sweeney paced Carroll with 14 points. Taylor Wilson pitched in with seven.
Conestoga lost to Upper Darby, 44-36, Jan. 4. Katharine Gay scored 10 points for the Pioneers, and teammate Katie Faith chipped in with eight.
Episcopal Academy defeated Agnes Irwin, 40-23, Jan. 3. EA held AIS to single digits in all four quarters. Riley Cassidy led a balanced attack with 10 points. Agnes Irwin’s Katie Anderson led all scorers with 19 points.
Haverford High lost a close 35-34 decision to reigning Central League and District 1 Class 6A champion Garnet Valley Jan. 4, rallying from a 28-16 deficit at the end of three quarters. For the Fords (5-4, 3-2), junior forward/guard Addison Brodnik had 15 points (nine in the final quarter), four steals and three rebounds, while junior guard Chiara MacGillivray banked four shots from beyond the arc and tallied nine of her game-high 17 points in the final period.
Sacred Heart Academy defeated Bishop McDevitt, 44-18, Jan. 3. Carina Fichera scored 12 points and the defense held the Lancers to seven points in the first three quarters. Emily McKenna chipped in with nine for the Lions. 
The Lions lost to Villa Joseph Marie, 56-43, Jan. 4. Kayleigh Doyle set a career high with 18 points, and had five steals and four assists, while Carina Fichera pitched in 12 points.
Villa Maria Academy defeated Merion Mercy, 48-33, Jan. 4. The Hurricanes got 14 points from Morgan Warley and 13 points from Maddy Ryan. For Merion Mercy, Kiersten Krouse scored 12 points, including a trio of treys.

Boys’ swimming
Conestoga defeated Haverford High, 100-68, Jan. 3. First-place finishers for the Pioneers included Stanley Kim (200 free); Stephen Graver 50 free); Raymond Welgosh (100 fly); Luke Nagel (100 free); Aidan Brown (500 free); James Manion (100 breast); the 200 free relay team of Gary Wang, Nagel, Miles Whitaker and James Hughes; the 200 medley relay team of Graver, Wang, Welgosh and James Hughes; and the 400 free relay team of Wang, Matthew Pawlow, Welgosh and Graver.
Malvern Prep lost to perennial power LaSalle, 104-72, Jan. 3. Malvern Prep went 1-2 in diving and the 100 breast. Nick Harris (319.72) and Danny Faunce (221.33) combined to win the diving while Ryan Durkan (1:00.22) and Patrick Rooney (1:01.04) took the breast.

Girls’ swimming
Conestoga defeated Haverford High, 97-71, Jan. 3. First place finishers for the Pioneers included Audrey Laganelli (200 free); freshman Lily Robinson (50 free and 500 free, where she posted 5:25.87); Allison Yuan (100 fly); Kalie Whitaker (100 back); Naomi Furman (100 breast); the 200 medley relay team of Whitaker, Furman, Yuan and Robinson; the 200 free relay team of Robinson, Louise Hay, Laganelli and Yuan; and the 400 free relay team of Laganelli, Ava Collin, Keira Haas and Delaney Burns.

Wrestling
Harriton earned three individual wins in the Jan. 3 meet against Lower Merion – Alex Adler and Roberto Lesser got pins, and Jack Hannon won by decision.
The following day, Harriton had several fine performances at the Great Valley Tournament, including Luke Fink (3-0 with two pins), Bobby Lesser (3-0 with one pin) and a quartet of wrestlers who each went 2-1 at the tourney – Gainfranco Colella, Vincent Dilella, Jack Hannon and Max Ostrem.
Haverford High defeated Upper Merion, 75-6, Jan. 4. Pins by Jack Lacianca at 113 pounds, Michael Ryan at 145, Henry Shannon at 182 and Jon Harwood at 195 send the Fords on the way to an easy victory. Eddie Davis battled out a 9-8 win over Miguel Amor at 138 pounds.

Indoor track
Radnor runner Keara Seasholtz finished fourth in the Invitational 400 meter race at the Ocean Breeze Holiday Invitational in New York Dec. 30, clocking a season best time of 59.6. Sophomore Lucy Henkle placed eighth in the same event with a personal best time of 62.0. Seasholtz and Henkle combined later in the meet with Norah Seasholtz and Grace Frigerio to place seventh in the 1600 meter relay.
Seasholtz placed second in the mile run to lead the girls track team in the Collegeville High School Invitational at Ursinus College Jan. 4, clocking a season-best 5:32.7. Lucy Henkle placed fourth in the 800 meter run. Henkle and Seasholtz combined with Lucy Minning and Jill Matunis for a fifth place finish in the 1600 meter relay, with a season-best time of 4:20.08.
