ROUNDUP: Penncrest freshman Dawson helps new Lions coach Shumoski to winning debut

Leah Shumoski began her coaching tenure Friday at Penncrest in winning style.

The All-Delco and University of Sciences Hall of Fame member watched as freshman Bridget Dawson scored a game-high 19 points in a 39-25 victory over Sun Valley at the Media Tip-Off Tournament.

The Lions outscored the Vanguards 17-7 in the second half.

Senior forward Alexis Galloway tossed in 19 points for Penncrest, while Maya Morris paced the Vanguards with 13 points.

Strath Haven 51, Academy Park 48 >> The Panthers battled back from a 14-4 deficit after the first quarter, outscoring the Knights 37-18 in the second and third periods. Faith Raymond (13 points), Danielle McNeely (12) and Cayden Frazier (10) all reached double digits in scoring.

Gabrielle Jackson netted 18 points and Lashay Jackson pitched in with 10 for AP.

At the Haverford Hall of Fame Tournament:

Bonner-Prendergast 59, Audenreid 33 >> Alexis Gleason powered the Pandas with 20 points. Aniyah Jackson hopped off the bench to score 10 points and Bridie McCann also tallied 10.

Nazareth Area 27, Haverford 21 >> The Fords blanked Nazareth 7-0 in the opening quarter and led 13-6 at halftime, but couldn’t hang on for the win. Chiara MacGillivray led with 10 points.

At the Methacton Tip-Off:

Ridley 63, Lansdale Catholic 48 >> Dakota McCaughan made a nice first impression at her new school. The senior guard, who transferred from Bonner-Prendergast, registered 28 points on 10 field goals.

Shannen Hinchey had 16 points for the Green Raiders, who scored 26 points in the second quarter.

At the Abington Tip-Off:

Abington 52, Springfield 50 >> The Galloping Ghosts made a putback with five seconds to play to win the game. Alexa Abbonizio scored a game-high 24 points for the Cougars, who play Bethlehem Catholic in the consolation game Saturday at 12:30. Rachel Conran added nine points in the defeat.

At the Pottsgrove Tip-Off tourney:

Plymouth Whitemarsh 63, Upper Darby 18 >> Jasmine Forrester (14 points) accounted for nearly all of the offense for the Royals, who were missing two starters on opening night due to injury.

In nonleague action:

Garnet Valley 53, St. George’s Tech 12 >> Thirteen players got on the scoresheet for the Jaguars, who led 23-6 after the first quarter and shut out their Middletown, Del., visitors in the second period.

Courtney MacDonald and Ava Possenti netted eight points apiece to pace the reigning District 1 Class 6A champions. Mary Rose Berry and Liesl Dentinger each chipped in with six points.

Penn Wood 65, Bensalem 51 >> La’Shonda Smith poured in 20 points and Racquel Curry tossed in 14 for the Patriots, who outscored Bensalem by 13 points after halftime. Jada Hutt contributed 12 points and Xena Gillis chipped in with eight.

Notre Dame 41, Westtown 29 >> Allie Lynch scored 14 points and Katie Halligan netted 10 for the Irish, who used a 26-14 run in the middle periods to cruise past Westtown.

Shipley 52, Episcopal Academy 44 >> The Churchwomen were within three points, but couldn’t pull closer. Raeleen Keffer-Scharpf tallied 12 points and Cara Harty finished with 10 in the losing effort.
