Reporter Roundup: North Penn knocks off Lower Merion, advances to District 1-4A quarters

Emily Varilla gave the North Penn girls soccer team a 2-0 lead in the second half then drew a penalty kick which Tia Sheehy converted as the No. 13 Knights advanced to the District 1-4A quarterfinals by upsetting No. 4 Lower Merion 3-0 in the second round Thursday night.

North Penn (11-7-2), which is unbeaten in its last eight (7-0-1), visits No. 5 Pennsbury in the quarters 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Becca Richardson gave the Knights a 1-0 lead off a Grace Sacchetti free kick at 11:32 in the first half. Varilla doubled the advantage at 31:09 in the second half with Sheehy adding NP’s third goal on a PK with 7:30 remaining.

MaST Charter 4, Dock Mennonite 1 >> Third-seeded Dock Mennonite made it 1-1 on Kayla Godshall’s strike from 30 yard out but No. 2 MaST Charter scored the next three to pull away and win Thursday’s District 1-1A semifinals. The Panthers move on to meet No. 1 Calvary Christian in the final 5 p.m. Wednesday at Central Bucks West.

BOYS SOCCER

Dock Mennonite 3, The Christian Academy 1 >> Goalkeeper Reynaldo Ramos’ diving save of the penalty kick kept the Dock Mennonite boys soccer team even 1-1 with The Christian Academy and three minutes later the McKade Trauger put the Pioneers up on a PK as No. 2 Dock advanced to the District 1-1A final with a 3-1 victory over the visiting No. 3 Crusaders Thursday night.

Ralph Saint-Fleur scored twice for the Pioneers (16-4-0), who look to claim their first district title since 2009 when they face Delco Christian 7 p.m. Wednesday at Central Bucks West. No. 4 Delco upset top-seeded Faith Christian in penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie.

Ramos finished with nine saves while The Christian Academy keeper Sam Geathers had five saves.

TCA led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Grant Sareyka. Saint-Fleur leveled the contest seven minutes then added a second to make it 3-1 off a JD Bennett assist.

FIELD HOCKEY

Springfield (Montco) 2, Lower Moreland 0 >> Charlotte Henry and Ella Marino each had a goal in the first half as second-seeded Springfield secured a PIAA berth with a shutout victory over No. 3 Lower Moreland in the District 1-1A semifinals Thursday.

Maddie Yoder had two assists while Rebecca Berglund made two saves for the Spartans (16-4-0), who face No. 1 New Hope-Solebury in the final 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lower Moreland.

New Hope-Solebury 7, Dock Mennonite 0 >> Sabrina Vlahovic and Elia Ezosenchi both scored a pair of goals while Vlahovic added an assist as New Hope-Solebury earned a District 1-1A semifinal win Thursday at Central Buck West.

Sophia Cozza had a goal and two assists for the Lions, who led 4-0 at halftime. Kate Dougherty collected a goal and an assist while Erin Firth also scored for NHS, which plays for a third straight district title Tuesday.

Casey Harper made nine saves for Dock, which ends its season at 12-7-1.
