Vaughan helps Sun Valley cling to one-goal win

Brendan Purfield’s first-half goal held up Saturday, thanks to great work in goal by Ryan Vaughan, as Sun Valley held off Springfield for a 1-0 nonleague boys soccer win.

It was Vaughan’s fourth shutout of the season as the Vanguards improved to 6-8-2. Vaughan had five saves, with defensive help from Alex Benz, Joey Shapiro, Nate McGinnis, Logan Roland and John Nolek.

R.J. McGeary assisted on Purfield’s goal.

In other nonleague action:

Strath Haven 2, Avon Grove 0 >> Kind of a double-team, team effort for the Panthers, as Emmett Young and Sal Kaufman scored goals, Simon Bollinger and Ethan Birch had assists and Charlie Shankweiler and Rob Guilday had two saves each in net.

Radnor 2, Penn Wood 0 >> Ben Engstrom and Bobby Hydrisko scored second-half goals to boost the Raiders to victory. Joquain Cohen had five saves and Peter Vitale an assist.

In the Bicentennial League:

Delco Christian 3, New Hope-Solebury 1 >> Goal-scorers for the Knights were Jason Woo (unassisted), Micah Metricarti and Jack Dill. Cole Levis had a pair of assists.

New Hope’s Ben Koeppen scored a goal, but Josiah Bronkema had four saves for the Knights. Kyle Campbell saved three for New Hope.
