McGuinn helps O’Hara top Sun Valley

Two of Delco’s top volleyball teams played Monday. Cardinal O’Hara and Sun Valley entered the night with a combined 31 wins and five losses. 

Their match lived up to the hype.

Sun Valley gave a valiant effort, but Cardinal O’Hara earned its 15th straight victory with a 3-1 decision. The Lions outdueled the Vanguards in four grueling sets 25-22, 17-25, 25-15, 29-27.

Bridget McGuinn recorded 19 kills, three digs, two blocks and two aces for the Lions (18-1). Regan Hickey paired 13 kills with 12 digs and Juliana Cloran set the tone on offense with 27 assists to go with three digs.

Kristine Guenther was excellent on attack for the Vanguards (14-4), finishing with 15 kills and 20 assists. Olivia Nickerson (11 kills, 21 digs) and Hannah Vickers (eight kills, 17 digs) flourished on offense and defense. Rachel DiCarlo also shined on defense, compiling 17 digs.

In the Central League:

Upper Darby 3, Harriton 0 >> Tara Gilligan’s five aces, 10 digs and 10 assists guided the Royals to a 25-20, 25-23, 25-22 sweep of the Rams. Violet Lange contributed 10 kills and 11 digs, Rylee Shanahan had 15 digs and four kills, and Devon Conaway finished with seven assists.

Garnet Valley 3, Conestoga 0 >> Sophia Antignani paced the GV defense with 17 digs and two aces. Sopfia Davis (five kills), Sam Mann (eight kills), Caitlyn Haggerty (five kills, two aces), Annie Bechtold (five kills, three aces) and Ally Huford (three kills, two aces) powered the Jags on offense.

Ridley 3, Marple Newtown 0 >> Angela April pounded 11 kills to lead the Green Raiders to a 25-16, 25-15, 25-14 sweep of the Tigers. Riley Finnegan racked up 10 digs, Abi Herrin chipped in with seven kills and two blocks, and Madison Vinovrski made five blocks. Casey Tinney supplied 12 assists for Ridley.

Lower Merion 3, Springfield 2 >> The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 advantage but fell 25-20, 27-25, 23-25, 14-25, 8-15.

Ashley Dolan supplied 18 assists and Emily Gowman registered 26 digs in the losing effort.

Strath Haven 3, Haverford 1 >> Gabby McGinn had a big night for the Panthers with 24 assists, eight kills, 15 digs and eight aces. Ellie Fisher totaled 12 kills and 21 digs. 

In the Del Val League:

Chichester 3, Penn Wood 0 >> Madison Snyder collected 11 assists and 10 digs for the Eagles, who bested the Patriots 25-22, 25-21, 25-10. Morgan Keith led the defensive effort with seven digs and Keyairrah Davie finished with three aces and five kills.

In other nonleague action

Bonner & Prendergast 3, Palumbo 2 >> Abby Lance was a defensive wizard, compiling 32 digs to go with five aces and one kills, as the Pandas rallied from two sets down to win 18-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-22, 15-11.

Sam Lachette provided nine kills and Lindsey Fagan registered four aces, eight kills, eight assists, eight digs and one block. Giaa DiAngelo pitched in with four aces and 14 digs, while Kelly Eisenhart added a pair of aces and five kills.

Notre Dame 3, Norristown 0 >> Riley Shaak paced the Irish (7-3) with eight kills, leaving her three shy of 1,000 in her career. Grace Guerin pitched in with eight kills and Maddie Schultz and Brynn Pippitt combined for 18 defensive digs.
