Shannon O’Neil is named Shipley’s new girls lacrosse coach

Bryn Mawr >> The Shipley School has announced the hiring of Shannon O’Neil as its new girls’ varsity lacrosse coach for the defending Friends’ Schools League champion squad.  

O’Neil, a native of Newburgh, N.Y., originally came to the Main Line as a student in 1993 at Villanova University. O’Neil was a starter as a freshman at Villanova and an integral member of the squad throughout her four-year tenure as an undergraduate.

O’Neil was named to the Mid-Atlantic Region All-American team in both 1996 and 1997. She was named to participate in the North/South Senior All-Star Game at the conclusion of her senior season in 1997. In addition, she served as one of the Wildcats’ co-captains.

Following graduation, O’Neil spent the 1998 season as an assistant coach then was named the first women’s lacrosse head coach at Division II Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H.

She returned to the Main Line to be the head coach at Villanova from 2000-2006. During her tenure, the Wildcats made multiple trips to postseason play for the Patriot League and she was named Patriot League Coach of the Year.

O’Neil still holds the all-time women’s lacrosse record at Villanova for career points (183 – 99 goals and 84 assists), and is second on the all-time list for both career assists (84) and career ground balls (189). O’Neil currently resides in Ardmore with her son Trey.
