Main Line wrap-up: Harriton, Conestoga, Radnor golf teams vie for supremacy

The strong Conestoga, Harriton and Radnor golf squads battled for supremacy during the week ending Sept. 9, with the Pioneers handing the Rams their first loss, Harriton dealing Radnor its first defeat and the Raiders earning two wins.
Conestoga (5-1, 5-0) defeated Harriton, 184-193, at the Philadelphia Country Club Sept. 4. The Pioneers were led by Morgan Lofland (34), Michael Walz (35), Ben Lee (36), Connor Loftus (39) and Kyle Mauro (40).
One day earlier, the Pioneers defeated Penncrest, Ridley and Upper Darby in a quad match at Waynesborough Country Club. The Pioneers’ total of 195 was better than Penncrest (211), Ridley (218) and Upper Darby (302). The Pioneers were led by Morgan Lofland (38), Drew Ridder (38), Connor Loftus (39), Ben Lee (40) and Michael Walz (40).
Harriton (9-1, 6-1) defeated Radnor, 187-199, Monday at Gulph Mills Golf Club. Andrew Wallace led the Rams with a one-under par 34, while David Fitzgerald and Niosha Parvizi each shot 36. Zach Sandler had a 38.
Five days earlier, the Rams lost to Conestoga, 185-193, as David Fitzgerald paced the Rams with a 36, Jay Ramaswamy carded a 37, Zach Sandler shot a 39 and John Bradbeer had a 40.
Radnor (6-1, 3-1) suffered its first loss of the season in a 187-199 loss to Harriton Monday at the Gulph Mills Golf Club. Luke Kelly led the Raiders with a 36, and Tyler Tornoe carded a 39.
The Raiders defeated Ridley, 192-222, at Radnor Valley Country Club Sept. 4. The Raiders were led by Quinn Bookbinder (37), Tyler Tornoe (38), Jack Hamilton (39), Luke Kelly (39) and Rishi Khanna (39).
One day earlier, Radnor defeated Malvern Prep, 190-193, at St. Davids Golf Club. The Raiders were led by Jack Hamilton (35), James Quinn (37), Tyler Tornoe (38) and Luke Kelly (38). For Malvern, the leaders were Keller Mulhern (34), Jack Fialko (38) and Ryan Kennedy (39).

Boys’ soccer
Barrack Hebrew Academy tied Academy of the New Church, 1-1, Sept. 4. Jordan Naim scored for the Cougars, assisted by Noah Ufberg. Barrack goalie Hayden Ufberg recorded two saves.
Episcopal Academy tied Westtown, 0-0, Sept. 6. For EA (1-0-2), goalies Alex Geczy (one save) and Trevor Manion (four saves) combined for the shutout.
The Churchmen tied Germantown Friends, 1-1, Sept. 3. For EA, Flynn Kearney scored his first varsity goal, assisted by Trystan Craft. Episcopal goalie Alex Geczy recorded six saves.
Friends’ Central defeated Cardinal O’Hara, 3-2, Sept. 3. The Phoenix were trailing 1-0 when, with 33:05 left in the second half, sophomore Dylan Posencheg sent a cross into the box that sophomore Sam Gerber deposited it into the net. Less than three minutes later sophomore captain Jared Lonner sent a ball into the box that senior Anthony Cianfrani scored on. A few minutes later, Lonner delivered another ball into the box that junior Thabo Tsotetsi put into the goal. The duo of freshmen keepers Max Mattioni and Milan Pappas each came up with big saves.

Girls’ soccer
Academy of Notre Dame lost to Harriton, 3-1, Sept. 6. Abby Butler scored the Irish’s goal, with an assist from Morgan O’Brien.
Agnes Irwin defeated Hill School, 3-0, Sept. 7. Natalie Pansini scored twice, Carly Wilson had a goal and Alyssa Hardin dished out an assist. Goalie Amelia Leyden recorded six saves.
The Owls tied Friends’ Central, 1-1, Sept. 4. Alyssa Hardin scored for Agnes Irwin.
Baldwin School defeated Friends’ Central, 3-1, Sept. 6. Co-captain Alex Loomis had a hat trick, and Leah White and Josie Stockett dished out assists. Taylor Levinson recorded eight saves.
Episcopal Academy lost to Pennington School, 2-1, Sept. 7. Maya Naimoli scored EA’s goal, with an assist from Lauren Cunningham.

Field hockey
Academy of Notre Dame defeated Cardinal O’Hara, 8-1, Sept. 5. Senior forward Vivi Trumpbour scored six goals for the Irish (2-0), who also got five saves from goalie Paige Kieft.
Agnes Irwin tied Bonner Prendergast, 2-2, Sept. 6 The Owls got goals from Blake Stefan (assisted by Marissa White) and Hadley Evans (assisted by Lily Botta). Christina Lowther had a defensive save.
The Owls lost to Radnor, 2-0, Sept. 3. Owl goalie Aren Dardarian recorded seven saves.
Archbishop Carroll lost to Germantown Academy, 4-2, Sept. 6. The Patriots got goals from Grace O’Neill (assisted by Karli Dougherty) and Julia Kingsbury (assisted by Karli Dougherty). Carroll goalie Cat Crossan recorded seven saves.
Conestoga defeated West Chester East, 2-0, Sept. 6. Carly Hynd tallied a goal and an assist and Kate Galica scored Conestoga’s second goal Friday. Conestoga’s defense, led by Sofia Ries, Lily Wolfe, and Amanda Hill, held the Vikings to zero shots in the contest as Katie Clemson recorded her third shutout of the year for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers defeated Unionville, 6-0, Sept. 3. Carly Hynd and Kate Galica scored two goals each, and Chloe Ziegler and Jessica Mullin each added their first goals of the season. Conestoga’s defense, led by Lauren D’Emilio, Sofia Ries, and Lily Wolfe, held the Indians to zero shots and Katie Clemson registered the shutout in goal for the Pioneers.
Episcopal Academy lost to Hill School, 3-2, Sept. 4. Ashley Sessa and Mia Garber scored goals for EA, and Charly Bruder had two defensive saves. Goalie Gianna Cilluffo recorded four saves.
EA head coach Gina Buggy said, “This was a great game to play early in the season against a strong Hill team. Hill displayed good energy and we look forward to working hard on all phases of our game.”
Friends’ Central defeated Baldwin, 1-0, Sept. 6. Mari Snider scored the game’s lone goal, and FCS goalie Leia Andersen recorded six saves.
Merion Mercy Academy defeated Sacred Heart, 12-1, Sept. 5. Standouts included Victoria Arra, Grace Lopresti and Lilly Diebold.
The Golden Bears defeated Gwynedd Mercy, 2-1, Sept. 3. Golden Bear standouts included Kelly O’Connor, Victoria Arra, Lily Diebold and Alexandria Lavelle.
Radnor defeated Agnes Irwin, 2-0, Sept. 3. Olivia DeCain and Barb Civitella scored for the Raiders.
Sacred Heart defeated host Bristol, 3-0, Monday. Mary Lauren Franz had a hat trick and goalie Abby Braun recorded four saves and the shutout.
The Lions lost to Villa Maria Academy, 5-0, Sept. 3. Lion goalie Abby Braun recorded seven saves.
Shipley defeated Delco Christian, 2-1, Monday. The Gators were trailing 1-0 when freshman Katie Eads scored off of a cross ball pass from senior captain Carolina Riley. Shipley’s second goal came from senior captain Gianna McDougall, who was awarded with a stroke with eight minutes left in the game.

Girls’ tennis
Academy of Notre Dame defeated Ridley, 6-1, Sept. 5. The Irish (2-1) got singles wins from Grace Rivers (first singles), Leila Husain (second) and Ce Ce Quirk (third).
The Irish lost to Friends’ Central, 4-1, Sept. 4. For the Irish Leila Husain won at second singles in straight sets.
Baldwin School improved to 3-0 with a 5-1 win against Lower Merion Sept. 7. Izzy Antanavicius won 6-3, 6-3 at first singles, Torrie Smith won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles and Presley Daggett won 6-0, 6-0 at third singles. Hana Ahanger and Berlyn Squillaro won 6-4, 6-4 at first doubles and Zoe Leibovitz and Grace Sheehan won 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 at fourth doubles.
The Polar Bears earned a 6-1 non-league win against Hill School Sept. 5. Torrie Smith won at second singles 6-0, 6-1 and Presley Daggett won at third singles 6-4, 6-2. Baldwin swept the doubles with Hana Ahanger/Berlyn Squillaro (first doubles), Sophia Tavangar/Sophia Ran (second), Armina Emami/Mimi Salgado (third) and Zoe Leibowitz/Grace Sheehan (fourth).
Episcopal Academy defeated Westtown, 7-0, Sept. 5, winning all seven matches in straight sets, including singles (Ashley Kennedy – first singles, Stefania Calastri – second, Maddy Mitchell – third) as well as the doubles teams of Eliza Aldridge/Cara Harty, Caroline Burt/Georgie Crockett, Natalie Johnston/Madison Hanssens and Maggie Dugery/Maggie Lo.
The Churchwomen defeated Conestoga, 5-2, Sept. 3. EA’s Ashley Kennedy won in straight sets at first singles, and the Churchwomen swept the doubles matches. At first doubles was Eliza Aldridge/ Cara Harty, second was Caroline Burt/Natalie Johnston, third was Georgie Crockett/Madison Hanssens and fourth was Maggie Lo/ Maggie Dugery.
Friends’ Central defeated Academy of Notre Dame, 4-1, Sept. 4. Anna Volpp won at first singles in straight sets, and Sally Su was victorious in straight sets at third singles. The Phoenix also won second and third doubles in straight sets with Hallie Bender and Aliza Sall at second third doubles and Victoria Rosa and Lindsay McLammon at third doubles.
Radnor defeated West Chester Rustin, 7-0, Monday, winning all seven matches in straight sets, including first singles (Kanon Ciarrocchi), second singles (Bridget Dougherty) and third singles (Lucy Hederick).
The Raiders defeated Haverford High, 7-0, Sept. 5, winning all seven matches in straight sets, including the singles matches of Kanon Ciarrocchi (first singles), Bridget Dougherty (second) and Lucy Hederick (third).

Girls’ volleyball
Academy of Notre Dame opened its season with a 3-1 win against West Chester Rustin Sept. 4, posting scores of 27-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-22. The Irish co-captains led the way as Riley Shaak scored 21 kills and nine blocks and libero Maddie Donaphon had 26 digs.
Baldwin School defeated Shipley, 3-1, Monday, posting scores of 25-15, 24-26, 25-21, 25-14. The Polar Bears were led by Tessa Pearlstein (12 kills, four blocks), Anajah Brown (eight kills, eight blocks), Elise Kait (12 digs, four aces), Olivia Stratton (14 assists, four digs, two aces) and Sydney Zilch (eight assists, four aces).
The Polar Bears defeated Academy of New Church, 3-0, Sept. 5, posting scores of 25-20, 25-23 and 26-24. The Polar Bears were led by Anajah Brown (eight kills, six blocks), Joelle Pearlstein (four aces, seven kills, seven digs), Tessa Pearlstein (nine kills), Sydney Zilch (three aces, 13 assists), Elise Kait (11 digs), Talia Viroslav (six digs) and Olivia Stratton (eight assists).
The Polar Bears defeated Bishop McDevitt, 3-0, Sept. 4, posting scores of 25-10, 25-21 and 25-4. The Polar Bears were led by Elise Kait (six aces, six digs), Olivia Stratton (eight assists), Sydney Zilch (eight assists), Tessa Pearlstein (four aces, six kills), Anajah Brown (three kills, nine blocks) and Joelle Pearlstein (six kills, four digs).
Lower Merion defeated Conestoga, 3-2, Sept. 4, posting scores of 25-13, 16-25, 25-21, 23-25 and 15-7. Sophomores Sophie Shin and Laila Newborn combined for 12 blocks. Freshman Claire Hamilton finished with nine kills.
Sacred Heart defeated Merion Mercy, 3-0, Sept. 6, posting scores of 25-14, 25-8 and 25-21. The Lions were led by Hannah Martinson (five kills, 24 assists, eight digs), Erin Corcoran (10 kills, eight digs) and Macie Moresco (eight kills).

Cross-country
Radnor had some solid performances at the Unionville Invitational Sept. 7. Naomi Gross placed eighth in the freshman girls race, covering the two-mile course in 13:18. In the boys sophomore race Jack Halberstad took home the 10th place medal (10:58). In the senior boys race Frank Brown and Owen Leonard finished 12th and 21st, respectively, with times of 10:27 and 10:38.

Water polo
Haverford School (6-0) defeated Hill School, 12-9, Sept. 4. The Fords were led by Ryan LaRocca (three goals, six assists, three steals, two blocks), Grayson Walker (three goals), Bram Schork (three goals, two steals) and goalie Koby Degenhardt (seven saves, one steal).
Malvern Prep defeated St. Bendict’s Prep, 15-8, Monday. The Friars (3-1) jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the half behind a stout defense (14 steals and three blocked shots) in front of goalie Jake Caulfield, who made 16 saves. Chris Krein led the defense with six steals. Jack Cassidy (seven goals), Eric Yablonski (five goals), Ryan Cochran (two goals) and Gavin Kane (one goal, four assists) led the Friars on offense.
